My daughter apparently has an odd shaped head!  . Last year, we took her to our local saddlery looking to get a hat for her for showing, considering the shop is quite big, they do not do the most varied selection of hats, none of the small selection that they had fitted her, we had to plump for a Charles Owen kids hat in the end, which is velvet but doesnt have a flesh strap. The saddlery said that it fitted OK but really my daughter needs a jockey skull (as they are a round shape, as opposed to the more oblong shape of velvet hats). As show season is coming up and her head has grown (again!), she needs a new hat for showing (her everyday hat still fits for now), I got hold of a second hand H2000, although it sort of fits, it doesnt really (it goes on her head but isnt the best fit, its squeezing her sides slightly:-/). So, has anyone got any idea's??....I am looking for a more rounded hat for her. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just my daughter thats awkward!  I was thinking of a Fiona (which our local saddlery doesnt stock!  ) or perhaps a Champion classic....the trouble is its finding a saddler that stocks them!, I dont mind trying to find a saddler further afield that stocks other hats, just dont want to get there to find out that they are all made the same......  . I dont want to be forking out £400+ for a made to measure as she'll probably grow out of it again by next year. |

John ayres saddlery in Cardiff pads them to fit with no extra charge I believe?
There must be other saddles that do this, they have a website so may be worth getting in touch to see if they can help

try the gatehouse hickstead riding hat, it looks really smart and its a very good price and im pretty sure it fits the 'rounder head' lol. think their sizes might come up a bit small though but im not 100% sure so youd have to go and try one on  |

Don't go near the Fiona. Shape wise it's more oval than the other Charles and Owen hats.
I would stay away from Charles and Owen and start looking at other makes. This is an increasingly common problem apparently - heads are more round these days!
It's pretty safe to say that you are going to struggle for the next few years at least to find a velvet hat that fits best.
What you might be best doing, fit wise, is waiting until the show season is up and running and go to one of the big county shows that has lots of equestrian tradestands. There you'll find the biggest selection of hats, and an opportunity to shop around for the best fit.

I have found this Champion model which looks pretty rounded - my son has a massive head, and he wears a Requisite bog standard one from Robinsons. Their jods/breeches are reasonably priced and from my perspective come in boy-friendly colours, like brown and navy, which my son was chuffed with! |

I agree with the gatehouse hickstead hat, the Charles Owen H2000 and Showjumper XP were all to bulky and oval shaped for my head and the hickstead hat is a better fit than them |

Nice to know that I am not the only one with a child with an odd shaped head. The darling daughter has a fairly flat back to her head. I'm sure as a consequence of being told that babies must sleep on their backs. This means that if the hat fits at the front you can get your whole hand in the back of it. The only hat that properly fits her is a jockey skull. The local saddler was not prepared to sell me any other hat as he was concerned about safety. Good on him really but I have to say that even with a really good quality velvet cover fitted it does not look anywhere near as smart.
At the end of the day a hat is for protection and if it doesn't fit properly then it is not doing it's job. But I would like to find a really smart one that fits, so will check out some of the suggestions....

Definitely try the gatehouse Hickstead. I had the same problem, and found the charles owen hats too narrow for my head, my gatehouse fits me perfectly. Sizes do come up small though-my normal hat is 56cm, and my gatehouse is 54cm.

Hi, Ive had a few years struggling to find a nice show hat for my daughter that fits! She had to show in a skull cap with velvet cover for the first few years. With the slim fitting Fiona's, H200 hats you dont stand a chance. We had a rep visit us from Charles Owen and we are now fitted with a 'Wellington'. We had to get a few sizes too big and pad it out in all the places it needed it. We have shown at county level in this hat and had no problems. Good luck |

We got a Gatehouse Hickstead....fits perfect!. Much more rounded than the Charles Owen ;D

Have you got the sizes for your hat the wrong way around? surely if the sizes come up small you would need a bigger size than normal to fit? Just want to check as I also have a rounder head, so have only ever found skull caps that fit me, so this hat sounds like it would be a good choice for showing! ;D |
