Some react to tea tree, I don't know if that fits the facts. Have you spoken to Top Spec to see if they have anything to say about it?

I've got one that came out in hives when fed Alfa-A Oil and Alfa-A mollasses free. I think it's the alfalfa he's allergic to, but it could be the soya oil. I avoid both now anyway and haven't had any problems since. He gets really hot and itchy and then comes out in hives.

Have either of you tried feeding only, and I mean only, hay to see what happens? I'm no expert so don'tknow how long it would take after removing an allergen from the diet to the itching stopping, but for sweet itch it can take up to three weeks after being bitten for it to subside. And then if then not itching to introduce feeds very gradually, one at a time.
Have you thought of the bedding?

My cob has just the same sort of rash. I had started him on a top spec balancer when it started but when I contacted his previous owner she said he was allergic to barley and I had him on barley straw. So stopped that and the balancer, put him on shavings, vet has been and he has had two Dectomax injections and have come to the conclusion it is just heat type allergic rash. He has no rugs at night and only very lightest turnout just to keep him clean. Some days it has gone right down (like yesterday) but today up as bad as ever. Had stopped riding him but starting again and it doesn't seem to bother him. Haven't managed to come to any successful conclusion as to what it is. Am sure it isn't the balancer. I did have him on soya oil but stopped that. He now just has fast fibre and hay - nothing else. It has been driving me mad!

Could be a protein rash. I dont know what the protein % is in the feeds mentioned but too much can cause this type of urticaria rash-the only types of horses that should really need higher levels of protein are foals/youngsters and top level race/competition horses.

Only trying to help. But it's still possible that some ingredient in the stud cubes is the same as something in his previous diet.

Contact cross gates laboratories and send a skin /hair sample off , they will tell you what they are allergic to and send you a herbal remedy to counteract it , saves a lot of guessing and vet bills , good luck xxx

thanks for all help , well today after 2nd day of no top spec rash rash has gone right down , but i also have had him naked (hes full clipped ) as much as i can without chilling him ..mind you hes like a radiator!! and that seemed to help, its definatly not tea tree as i used that after rash full established. looking like top spec but think maybe due to protein in it so will put him on top spec lite as he did equally well on that and was on it with no prob so not 100% sure at moment may put him back on healthy hooves again too as had him on that when he was in no work . thanks again as found all very helpful

If he is reacting to something in his feed that could make him generate heat. Hopefully you have found the source.

Our pony has a severe reaction to feed balancers,it brings on instant laminitis symptoms, and he is not fat and never has been!

I'm sure feed companies producing balancers that trigger allergies/laminitis - well it would most likely be one ingredient only - would be interested to hear about the reactions and talk to you about them.

Wash him well all over with Nizoral as if it's a fungal thing it will kill off the fungus.

My mare is intolerant to Alfa a. Apparently it's quite common especially in mares. She doesn't have lumps or anything just turns itchy and very restless. Good luck in finding out what's causing your boy to be so unwell

You might be struggling if it is a protein intolerance... I normally reccomend Micronised Linseed, but that's high in protein. You could try some and see what happened - I've never heard of a horse reacting to it - my intolerant boy doesn't. Speedi-beet would be another option and possibly Grass Nuts as well as ad-lib hay..
