For some reason I cant post on the NPS is it running thread but read about the person who has lost a 3 week old foal. I cant imagine how devastated you must be feeling, I am so sorry about your loss - its the bloody helplessness you feel...
Late on Friday night a farmer was out dragging up hedges to save two horses from drowning - the water was up to their necks and if it hadnt been for such help they would have drowned.
For everyone suffering a loss, whether it be chickens, pet rabbit etc and for all the wildlife too I send you every good wish I can. For everybody moaning about stupid horse shows being cancelled - read the papers, listen to the radio, watch TV - people and animals are suffering horribly.
I've been flooded twice over the last 15 years and I was one of the lucky ones, material damage only and well insured. But nothing could help if I lost one of my animals.
Sorry to sound ponitificating but I just cant believe someone can tell us on a thread about the loss of a foal and the thread just continue on bleating about the NPS.....

I don't think you have anything to apologise. The events in the south should help some people to put things into perspective. It may be their holiday for the year, but at least they still have a house to live in and don't have to wonder about where they will be staying for several months.

Couldn't agree more,as I have said elsewhere on this forum,I think it would be extremely insensitive of the NPS to carry on whatever the state of the ground.Competitors will have to drive through these devastated areas to get there, not to mention the drinking water situation. There is more to life than qualifiers and a reality check is what some of these people need.

My thoughts exactly Demelza, in the general scheme of things the show is of no real consequence, whatever some may think. And my heart really goes out to all those poor people. and especially to those who lost their little foal, I would be devastated if that happened to one of ours, loss of life whether animal or human due to this is just such a terrible waste, the people of those areas need time to put their lives back together, and to my mind shown a little sensitivity.

I also felt so sad when I read about the foal drowning, commiserations to your friend she must be feeloing so upset, the mare too must be distraught. When I see my two babies dashing round the paddocks without a thought for all the plans I have for them, I just hope they make it to maturity in one piece- if anything happened to them...................

here, here.
And my commiserations to the owner of the foal, so sad.
My friend who lives near Reading had to rescue her horse who was in middle of flooded field . Luckily it had not got so high that they could not get out - but it was up to her thighs and the horses's belly when they were quite literally wading out the field !! And she is 16.3hh horse .... So quite a close call.
My little 14.2hh would have had to swim !
They have said on the news that the rivers should have now peaked or soon to. So fingers crossed for not too much more wet weather and let the water levels go down.
Alexia.

Completely agree with all. I'm the other side of Gloucester from the floods but people in the village, including my mother, where flooded. It is horrendous. I also feel very upset about the foal and others that we haven't heard of and really these people compaining about possibly not being able to go to NPS should sit down and think about what they have got that others haven't. I had a riding accident nearly 4 yrs ago and had to sell my pony etc, etc, etc, not boring you with details but I have now found the pony I always wanted.....She's knocked herself so cannot be shown this season... I've been to ONE show so far!!!! I am in no way feeling angry if shows are cancelled that's life look ahead to 2008 for goodness sake and appreciate what you have. It's a lovely sunny day today enjoy it.

Completely agree Julie so very sad to hear of the loss of the foal. I really would think that people would have something better to do then moan about the loss of a show in these circumstances. I cannot bear to watch the news anymore as it doesn't take much imagination to realise just how much life has been lost, be it hedgehogs, rabbits, ducks, cattle, ponies or human it is all so tragic.

To all those moaning selfish people
I am sorry you don't get to have your Championships and holiday but please spare a thought for us as we didn't chose to be devastated like this. My family are currently living in a friends house with no water supply. We have lost everything - our home that is not likely to be lived in again for 6month +, all our belongings including special memories and photos, 2 cars, stables, horsebox and much much more. My horses were moved just in time to a friends and will now be roughed off until 2008 as can not even think of going showing such a shame you will miss out on this one event that you have worked hard for like I also worked hard with my horses. We also worked very hard for all our belongings and property that we have lost. I hope you get to have your show and if it goes ahead at Malvern I will come and watch but I have no doubt a few of you will find something to moan about afterwards as you drive home in your lorries past the devasted villages and towns.

A moment in time: bought Daily Mail and front cover was the scene of Tewkesbury imitating a island, then turned to page two - there was an article about buying a saucepan made of special metal AND GOLD AND DIAMONDS retailing for £100,000.
What a world we live in.......

Well said everyone, the pics on TV are shocking to see and I'm sure in real life it is a thousand times worse, I can't begin to imagine the devastation of losing all your belongings and treasured possessions that can't be replaced by any amount of money. So sorry for the people who lost their foal, very sad, and I'm sure there are many more similar stories that we haven't heard of. Thankfully the weather forecast isn't too bad for the near future so hopefully this will help speed up the clean up (or at least not make matters any worse) My thought are with everyone in the flooded areas at this time.

The whole situation is devastating, those poor people with no clean drinking water etc and I just heard on the radio how the big supermarkets were running out of water and was then disgusted to hear that the local shops were selling milk at £4.00!!!!! Can't believe they are cashing in on this!

It will not help the locals if we do not try and run this show!! - Why do you ask?? - They need us, our Show brings in an emormous amount for money into the local shops, pubs, B & B's, money that they need to survive.
Okay if access is impossible and their is no water then the decision is made for them
Perhaps a gate collection towards their clear up funds at the gate would be our way of saying we do care - You think if everybody gave £2 that could be a substantial amount of money
Come on you lot, dunkirk spirit - we can make a difference without being insensitive

Oh great realistic. i am sure the locals are worried about our measly money at this time!!!!!. do you not think that what wagons can get through should be carrying more essential supplies like water!!!!!!! For gods sake get a life. Its a show!!!!!!! I would if I could (and I have offered) willingly drive the water tankers to the area. Stuff the ponies. Mine are damp but fine! I am waiting for my offer (for free by the way) to be taken up. they have enough to deal with but if i can help in any small way I will. I come from an area devastated by floods a few years ago. Unless you have been in this situation you have not a clue. Stuff the show!!!!!!!! Lets make sure the people are ok and their animals.

My fear is the water supply to us/ponies, if it is a problem do they need to supply bottled water to the likes of us...... surely not. Hoping they postpone, the decent thing i believe is to put it on hold. Can someone start one of those threads "who thinks it should be a) cancelled, b) postponed, c) continued d)resited.

I spent the most surreal afternoon today. I work for the Fire Service and spent the afternoon in our temporary command centre at Strensham Services on the M5. It was so weird to be there coping and watching the car park filling and emptying with cars carrying surf boards and peoples holiday baggage while Gloucestershire is struggling along. We have no water at home or at the Brigade HQ. Thank God I still have electricity. We have had Lynx helicopters flying in and out all day at work and I began to feel like a bit part player in MASH!!!!! It is so strange to see so many people travelling around the country passing by the havoc and living normally when so many people in Gloucestershire and in such dire straights. We are getting such fantastic support from many other Fire Services, The Army, The Ghurkas, Navy and Airforce, SARA and many others including many volunteers. I hope I haven't missed anyone out and they cannot know how much their support means.

You see .This is not some little minor inconvenience that can be tidied up and cleared away in a couple of days so that we can all carry on enjoying our meaningless little hobby.Read Dawns comments and you will see that it is all too real. Some people in Yorkshire are still living in a leisure centre and hanging their washing out over the tennis court and thier flood happened in June !!

Let's all donate our entries and stabling to the Flood fund. Yes we may have saved hard to go but a show is not a necessity in life. We should be willing to give that money up to help those in need and be willing to give back at least a bit to the community who would benefit from the show and to an area we love to visit each year

I have to agree with so many of you who have posted on here, i personally think that the Championships should be cancelled. Aside from the moral issue it will surely not help locals with 100's of horseboxes struggling through their already shattered road system, never mind the poor emergency services. I would also doubt that any independent risk assessor would give the championships the nod of approval to continue. I hope that the NPS base the decision on whether the show will run or not on more than the financial implications, but i have my doubts! Last night our village flooded my father in-law has not seen the water this high for 60 years. It never ceases to amaze me how people pull together in an emergency. Thankfully my ponies are on high ground however i have one mare at stud near Tewkesbury, thankfully she can swim & i mean that very seriously. Everywhere flooded so quickly that the stallion & his mares got trapped on a very small piece of high ground, if it hadn't been for the courageousness of the stud owners grandaughter who swam out to them & back with them i do not think that they would all be here now.

This is becoming very serious as i understand that premature twins have died because they were standed by the floods.
Please will people stop and think and get this all into perspective.

I think some of the animals are being looked after in boarding kennels and rescue centres, there was something on GMTV about it this morning, but sadly I'm sure many have been split up from their families and are straying or have perished

I live between Tewkesbury and Upton on the edge of the flood plain and our house has had over two foot of water in it on Monday and Tuesday. I feel lucky and honoured to have witnessed such kindness and help during the last few days. In our village people from at least two houses had to be airlifted out. One farmer spent two days helping another farmer save his sheep and as much of his house as possible, going down to the farm by boat, moving bales of straw into a barn to raise the sheep as high as possible. On Monday he thought they would have to go a shoot all the sheep, but luckly all the work they did paid off and they are OK. I know of four ponies that were swam out of the flood water, one a three year old 11.2hh pony, who was lead from a boat in waters over 10ft deep.
When I look at what these people have gone through I feel lucky that we have only had two feet of water in the house and that our stables, yard and one field were not effected by the flooding. At present we have no running water, no electric (been off since Sunday) and have only just managed to get out of the village today.
I am due to be riding in a dressage competition this weekend and am about to phone the centre to see if it is still on and I hope it is, as my whole family need a break from the situation and the clean up - and the pony could do with a change of scene as well. I also know that everyone flooded whould be pleased that I could go to a show as it is a sign that life can go on.
I hope NPS is not cancelled, as far as I know Three Counties water supply is OK and not effected my Myth Water Works so that should not be a problem - might be able to fill the lorry and stock up for home! The going at Three Counties is always a problem one way or the other, normally people are moaning the rings, particularly the WHP's are too hard - but if the show goes ahead it is your choice.
On the current situation the water is now going down, when I left this morning there was about an inch left in our house and for the first day since Saturday we can drive in and out of the Village. Yes Tewkesbury is still closed, but many of these roads are now opening slowly and Myth Bridge is only closed as they are pumping the water out of the Water works to get that back into operation.
Although rain is forecasted in the next few days, as long as it is not the heavy rain we had last Friday the situation with the flooding should improve. Maybe I will be able to exercise the horses by more then trotting up and down 1/4 mile of road through the village from one flooded junction to the next!

Where is the RSPCA who i feel should have emergency strategies in place ready for situations like this, and to have a network set up to offer temporary accommodation for flooded out horses and domestic pets? The RSPCA are working their socks off round here, sadly alot of the their work is now having to be done by the fire brigade and boat crews because the rescues are too unsafe and some decisions have not been the best. At Midnight on Saturday we had a knock on the door, from a young Rspca inspector in her twenties, she was soaked upto her waist from where she had been wading through the water. A local greyhound racing kennel had gone under and the dogs had to be evacuated to save them from drowning, they were sat in a tractor and trailer outside our farm gate, so of course we gave them a dryish barn to over night in. She and her two colleuges sat in the barn with the dogs soaked to the skin all night, and we uncertain of what to do decided to leave it to the proffesionals and if they needed anything to come back and ask. 5am next morning knock comes at the door, rspca lady letting us know that more pernament accomodation had been found for the dogs and they were leaving and thankyou for letting them use the barn. She infomed us that they hadn't had the best night, we had guessed this by the state of her, her clothes were now thick with blood, poor girl looked completely exhausted and explained that dogs had manged to scratch their muzzles off and carnage resulted, and someone would be back to pic up the corpses She said that three dogs had been killed by the others. She said she had done her best to clean the Barn up for us but could only find a shovel in the yard. We went round there later, and couldn't even set foot in the barn the door way was bad enough bits of dog and blood everywhere. Please don't critisise the rspca everyone is trying there very best with limited rescourses in this terrible time. Im ment to be off to the rihs tomorrow, something ive been really looking forward to since qualifying, but now after this weekend gone cant seem to find any enthusiasm.

Just heard on GMTV that the water is back on in Tewkesbury - one man had been boiling 10,000 litres a day for his cows.
