Back to the old subject of horse dentists and qualifications ? i have been having my old mare checked out by a recommended equine dental technician - twice yearly - a few months ago she started quidding so had him back again and he said she was fine. -- however I rang the vet who is a qualified Equine Dentist and he was shocked - she had to go into the surgery be sedated have a back tooth removed and it cost me 300 pounds. -- but she was worth it ! I now have a young horse and just want his teeth rasped without having to pay large vets fees! Can anyone recommend a really good kind Dentist -- However if there is anything seriously wrong there is no substitute for a Vet -- there doesn.t seem to be any serious issues with my youngster just want him checking out. - I am on a busy yard and everyone has their own Guru -- Would welcome recommendations from satisfied horse owners for routine work. many thanks. x

I have since found a qualified dentist whom is BSC Hons she is lovely kind and professional uses either traditional or preferably electrical run rasps etc, I had her last week wonderful with mine and my young one whom was first time. She is based Holy well N wales will travel 100 mile radius, I would not touch any of these ones anymore that are not BEVA recognised and qualified as they dont have the experience or training, I have been party to that unfortunately, so now only the best for mine. Her name is Rebecca Evans 07968424856 she charged £40 per horse she really was a credit and wonderful with my horses, hence sending you this message as lots of people have theses dentists unaware they are not qualified or trained properly, Hope you do not mind me forwarding her details, I have nothing to gain just nice to have a good one finally. I have Robin Earnshaw, he travels from Wakefield. He did have a website but I can't seem to find the link but if you Google him plenty of info comes up. He's very good and has a nice way with the horses. He's registered with the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians 07986 625372. He can be hard to get hold of but if you leave a message he will ring you back

I have also used Robert earnshaw and he did a suitable job, he was reccomended to me by my dentist when he couldn't get out, however one thing Robert doesn't do very well is incisor work, a horse at my yard had had Robert for years and had wonky front teeth that hadn't been corrected blocking the movement of the jaw side to side meaning he didn't flex very well to one side, owner saw My dentist correct this on one of my ponies and decided to swap to him too. I use Martin brooks, he is fantastic, infact so fantastic that he doesn't take on any new clients, only way you could get in with him is if you could go to a yard he already visits or get to one of his clinics, google him, he has a website

I wouldn't touch robin earnshaw with a barge pole! He holds the record for failing his exams the most amount of times! He also extracted a wolf tooth from one of our liveries horses and left part of the tooth still in there which has caused a large lump and lots of problems! Another one of our liveries horses which is very quiet to have his teeth done he had to sedate!! I use Paul Ianson! We have also had a very bad experience with Sally Kingsley!

Not liking all the back feedback on Robin, it's putting me off using him again Has any of you used Robert Ruddy he's fantastic Well it is the truth! I have had Paul Ianson for 15 years now and he does most of the yard apart from a few new liveries that have their own dentist! In 15 years he has only ever had to sedate two horses, one was a 4 year old mare that Sally Kingsley had made a massive mistake on and over looked a rare bottom wolf tooth! And the other was one of my D mares which would actually kill you if you go near her mouth, just sedating her was a 3 hour job!! But my D stallion who was like a bull and was a nightmare to do his teeth he was rearing and literally throwing us all over and Paul just stay so calm and whistles away and totally ignored him and just got on with the job! He usually makes me put my hand in when the gag is on and makes me feel the problems and explains everything and after 15 years of him coming twice a year I have learned a thing or two from him and he NEVER does something for the sake of it just to take your money, if it doesn't need doing he won't do it!

Robin Earnshaw treated a TB who belongs to a friend of mine and a cob cross type who both have Diastema (gaps in teeth which was never covered on my degree course) the TB had been under equine vets for a year- 16k (!!!!) spent through insurance and had to be sedated and stocked at their practice every time. She was looked at by Robin under mild sedation in her stable and has been eating well ever since. He has also done wonders for the cob cross who is now bordering on fat when he was a hat rack last year. I am having him to have my mare's wolf teeth out with my Vets providing sedation. I think everyone has good and bad stories but, for me, I prefer to see it at first hand

But hey each to their own ;-)

Robin Earnshaw removed the horses wolf tooth but he actually ended up breaking the wolf tooth and leaving part of it still in embedded in the horses gum! Which as you can imagine the gum has grown over the remaining part of the tooth and formed a large lump in the horses mouth which is painful for him! This also leaves the horse more susceptible to abscesses and infections!

Robin removed my mares wolf teeth a few months ago, we've had no problems. I wouldn't hesitate in using him again. It's each to their own I suppose, I've had bad experiences with vets and farriers that others would highly recommend but I would never use again.

Whoa! i have opened a can of worms here haven't i? obviously there are a lot of Dental Technicians out there, - i have been using one for many years but unfortunately he overlooked an important factor on my mare and the vet was rather shocked that he had not recommended her tooth removed. !! i am not mentioning names here but the regular guy is brilliant with horses and for routine stuff but have doubts now as to his judgement on more involved procedures -- All in all i think i will have to take the pain and get the qualified Dental Vet1 back and pay the price. !-- probably work out cheaper and better for my young horse in the long run

Well I used Robin for years now but hate seeing bad feedback as it put's me off using them. But then again I have a good farrier who some people with TB's with naff feet say they would never use again. Same as my back lady that I use. Don't think their is such thing as perfect in the horse world sadly.
Anyway just for a change I am going to get Gary out, he has lots of good feedback and much cheaper and with price of the vet bill that will be coming through my letter box soon through a loose tooth I need to save some pennies.

Thankyou to you all i am sure all these Dental Technicians have the horses health at heart and i am sure there are good and bad reports on everyone really! if only our horses could just tell us the problem !! YEAH! MUM ITS JUST MY BACK LEFT HAND MOLAR THATS THE PROBLEM it would be much easier and save us a lot of money investigating Teeth, backs , ill fitting bits and Saddles etc. -- has anyone heard of Jake Paterson - he operates in the Cheshire Area and supposed to be Good!

I use Clara Peake, well known in the workers espeically Intermediates, she only charges £40 and is based in Allesley, West Midlands and travels down to Southam area to visit my horses. She has wonders on them although I have not any surgical treatments regarding teeth with my horses.

Gary Wilson is just fantastic. Can't recommend him enough, does a fab job but almost as importantly takes the time to get to know the horses and see them as individuals.
