I was just wondering what everyone used to prep their horses coat before they go in the show ring and what products they use to give the coat shine and to do the quarter markings. The products I use tend to make the coat shine to start off with but then the scurf rises to the top even when the horse has been washed the day before. All ideas and help welcome. Thanks

All my products are supreme products love them, I use absorbine hoof oil though as this does not come off In the ring, quarter marking spray from supreme is great and then I use hairspray to keep it on! To bath I find best Tesco own shampoo conditioner it is orange around 40p or fairy washing up liquid. my horses gleam but the food and work helps them too xx

First essential is a good diet with balancer to make sure all the essential micronutrient boxes are ticked, then a good bath. I'm too old and mean to spend lots of money on specialist products, and use some of a gallon can of animal shampoo, spray coat shine, baby oil round eyes and muzzle, powdered chalk for white socks and old fashioned hoof oil for hooves. I'm still working through a gallon can of that bought years ago from someone giving up! I say that's what I use, well in fact nothing is shown from here any more so that's what I did use, and still would if getting any showing ready. And some cheap human hair gel if required.

if you bath the most important thing is really thorough rinsing. I would then put on a wicking rug to dry and to ensure the coat laid flat.
A coat will only be good if effort rather than products are used, there is no substitute for regular grooming. A damp coat and piece of broken plastic comb, the human variety is all that is needed, you can fix with hairspray andadd a little shine spray.
Please remember that Judges hate anything that ruins their clothes and also gimmicks, it is the way a horse is put together and goes that is the most important thing, the horse needs to be clean and well presented rather than smothered with horse make-up

I do so agree about the makeup - I think it looks dreadful as well as being a hazard for judges. And I really hate white hooves varnished black.

I don't put anything on their coats only because I judge once came up to me and rubbed her hand on my horses coat and said yuck coat shine and didn't place me. Never used it since and that was a good few years ago lol.
They have balancer a few months before show season starts and throughout the season, lots of grooming, and stripping of their coat and I always think the trick to it is to bath a couple of days before the show and keep the coat nice and flat with a Lycra rug or body suit. From experience I find they don't shine as much bathed the day before or the same day. I do use product for mane and tails though.

I bath a day or so before, it gives the oil time to come back into their coat, lots of elbow grease and a little human hair serum through their manes and tails. A touch of Brylcreem over their hocks (as long as they have good hocks )and knees and thats it !

Our bay used to have a newmarket wash - a splash of dettol in hot water and wiped over. The pine oil in it adds shine and the disinfectant part lifts ingrained dust. A quick wipe with a noodle with a small spray of pig oil is all the fell needs. The dirty grey pony gets a full bath with green fairy liquid and tail and legs washed using a mixture of fairy and purple spray.

Grooming daily, strapping and a good diet. Good old fashioned way!

agree with all of the above just to add the best thing to have in your pocket for the collecting ring is a piece of Velvet or very fine corduroy. picks up all the static, quick flick over will do the trick .....mind you when i do get to go showing i do like a little bit of gloss too just a little hehe

I do the last clip end of december so by now the coat has grown back nicely and not much shedding to deal with. Daily brushing and high oil feeds. I also bath a few days before a show and lay the coat with lycra rugs/neck covers. I like supreme products "sparkle" to get a nice shine on the day with a lot of rubbing with a soft cloth. I use alot of supreme products but absorbine hoof oil is the best for white hooves.

Cod liver oil makes a good hoof shine for white hooves, or olive oil, both will do good rather than harm to the hooves, please go by the rule; if you won't use it on yourself - don't use it on your pony!

Pantene ice shine or silky coat conditioner is great! Use hairy liquid/old people shampoo for a grey x
