I've just been turned away from the show after a one hundred mile journey I was told that spectators are not welcome and was asked to leave. Very disappointed. I hope that everyone had a great weekend despite the rain today.

Yes - at the gates. He said it had been made absolutely clear to him that it was passes only, no general public - for protection of the children apparently. He wouldn't even radio to double check as he said he had it 100% correct

Yes - at the gates. He said it had been made absolutely clear to him that it was passes only, no general public - for protection of the children apparently. He wouldn't even radio to double check as he said he had it 100% correct That's very strange, yesterday I turned up in a car to main entrance (had come back to get prize money and photos) and went in no questions asked. There were loads of cars parked and none had passes. Which gate did you go in?

I did go in the first gate by mistake but even when I told him I normally go in the other gate and pay to park with no problems he said I would be turned away there too. ETA one U turn, one more gallon of fuel and I am IN! Can't thank you guys enough for making me question it

harrypatch, sorry about the mess around you had and you were quite right to come back. Yes if you are a genuine showing follower/BSPS member then you are always welcome.
We are just being very cautious on the gates this week for several reasons. I understand that you did not have a BSPS membership card to speed your access in and combined with no show car pass this will put hinder things somewhat. I have spoken to the chap who was on the gate to ensure that he digs a little deeper when people have travelled a long way (especially if they have come to see friends or specific trade stands) and hope that you have a great afternoon.

there is someone else on another forum who has driven a very long way to come and spectate and been turned away. This does nothing for showing. She has gone home again and no doubt very out of pocket in terms of time and fuel. what are you doing about the people who have already been turned away and are upset and distressed? sorry the above is not good enough IMO
we have always come and spectated and supported friends at BSPS - half the atmosphere at a show is made from spectators. If shows are to become closed affairs with passes only it will be the death of the societies even quicker than the recession is trying to do

mf, are you on site? if you come to the office I can explain why we are being rather cautious.
As I said above, if people can explain who there are here to visit we can check this on the radio with the office and let in cars WITHOUT car passes or BSPS membership cards. We have let several hundred people in over the past 4 days who fit this criteria.

I think it is very sad if shows start to take this line. I wonder how many others have been in the same situation. I am not a BSPS member and would have come to spectate had it not been so far for us. People who just have an interest may wish to come and look even if they don't know anyone who is actually there.

Whilst i understand peoples frustrations I applaud the stance taken. Due to the value of horses and equipment on site and the history of thefts and horse interference and the need to ensure the safety of children Personally I found the security staff to be polite and very professional. We arrived without car pass etc but were allowed access following a number of checks. Let me ask you this question what would have been the response if it was found that nobody connected with the show etc had turned up and stole a horse, drugged it or stolen tack monies or abduction/interference of a child whilst on site. I believe the stance taken is a responsible one and should be applauded.

I am glad to see the security has been upgraded as we came on Friday drove straight in with a horse box and no security to be seen . We also left at about 9.45pm and again there was no security to be seen not even on the gate which we found astonishing as anyone could have driven in!!

tbh I have never thought about this before, when Chloe was little we were in those balmy days where gates were open, children wandered about all day at Peterborough with friends etc. I can understand how frustrating this must be for those who were stopped however totally agree with willyymint. I am sure the BSPS like all the societies has a duty of care and has to undertake risk assessments to show they are responsible in terms of safety of children and property. So sad this is such a reflection on the times we now live in, I still think our showing community is a caring one and people look out for each other but truth tells us this is not always the case. Have to agree that the WH team were wonderful at the show - so helpful and polite, we changed stable 3 times and nothing was too much trouble. We also drove on and off several times and again were greeted with a wave and a smile every time. These guys are just doing their job and I think they do it in a friendly helpful way. Maybe we should all make sure we take our membership cards with us or if family members/friends are coming to watch ensure that the security staff are made aware of reg numbers etc. I am sure shows want spectators but you would never get into a county show without a pass or by paying an entrance fee as a member of the public.

i often go to watch shows that i am not competing at because it is my interest. i would not expect to have to justify being there. it is terrible to treat people like criminals in this way.

p.s. i am not a member of any society so would be unable to show a membership card.
also, being a bsps member does not mean you will not steal, etc.

Havnt been to bsps champs since they moved to arena uk hut we used to have issues at Peterborough getting in without a pass someone competing within the show would have to meet us to get in

also, being a bsps member does not mean you will not steal, etc.[/quote] True but the chances of you interfering with a child is substantially diminished. We've been lucky in the showing world that entrance is free to the majority of shows but to put things into perspective recently when I attended a show there was a ploughing competition next door and entrance there was £15? Any way as I said I found the security to be professional, courteous and friendly keep it up guys!!! Furthermore would like to thank everyone concerned for making the show a thoroughly fab show.

sorry but i dont really see how paying an entrance fee or a membership fee diminishes the risk.
