Hi Don't think I've posted a thread here before but I have been an observing member for a while! I am in the process of purchasing a palomino filly who would (IMO ) be stunning as a riding horse. I do know of showing friends who do not like palominos and buckskins in the showring although they are M&M owners therefore I wondered if the same was said for RH's? My old mare competed in RH and latterly hack classes but she was dark bay so "fitted in" well. The filly isn't being bought specifically for showing but will be doing inhand classes as a youngster and I wouldn't like to enter her in RH classes if this was a big no-no. I know every judge will have their own opinion but if the majority won't consider a palomino then I will probably stick to the sports horse classes. Many thanks!

I would go for it! She'll certainly stand out and I guess judges will either love her or hate her for her colour. That said, if she has correct conformation and does a good ridden show, her colour should not go against her. Good luck!

No, go for it! you are so much more likely to be pulled well if the judge can recognise you! you're sure to get attention from judges and the class is judged on movement and conformation etc NOT colour... Good luck, would be interested to see how you get on xxx

Thanks for you comments. I'm so pleased you think so. I haven't shown in 4years after my mare retired through injury and, as I'm sure you can imagine, I have toyed with other disciplines since then (I have a show jumper who I tried to do dressage with) but wanted a horse that could do a variety of things but that I could also show. I'm trying to upload tapatalk so I can post a picture for you.
I'll definitely be updating you on her progress - I feel very out of the loop with showing these days!

As has already been said, a good horse is never a bad colour. A good judge will imagine every horse as a bay (or any solid colour) and go forwards from there x

My daughter used to have a lovely big buckskin she did a few RH classes on, and was never to my eye put down for his colour and it was certainly not remarked on by judges. He did stand out though, you won't be missed for good or bad!
As for M&Ms - it will vary with the individual breed. They are currently very fashionable for Welsh Cobs!

Not a palomino but friend got told in s4as that her horse was a perfect RH except for the fact he was coloured

Not a palomino but friend got told in s4as that her horse was a perfect RH except for the fact he was coloured There's always someone who thinks like that and it's a shame. I have always liked horses that are a bit "blingy". My horses are warmbloods and the one I showed had a brand mark - that did not go down well with some judges! I've tried to post a picture but it won't let me just now, server problem apparently! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Agree with what's already been said - you'll definitely stand out! Also, I've never known anyone who doesn't like palominos, so I doubt you'd get moved down because of it?

When I started in Welsh Ds there were very few palominos and the Welsh themselves didn't like them! One of my early ones came that colour, which at the time I'd have preferred not but pony more important than colour (I bought a perlino later on the same premise!) and I never regretted it. All her pure bred foals were pallys too.

I actually wanted to move from WB's to sec D's and wanted a palomino. It was one of those instances though that when I saw the picture of the filly for the first time on the studs Facebook page I just felt that I needed to have her. Not in a greedy brat way lol, but she was everything I'd wanted. I would like to have a sec D one day but as it would be my first ever cob I think one who's already been there and done it would be better than buying a foal.
I'll have to upload the pictures to photobucket I think - really don't like photobucket!

Shame, I have a big 3yo palomino D gelding here who could be a real star in the right hands. Three lovely paces, would be a great dressage horse too.

Stunning filly, showing she has that " Look at Me" presence. Would be very surprised if judges don't like her due to her colour..

Thank you for the nice comments, I am so pleased with her, she's everything I've been looking for. She should be quite a dark pally and will have a metallic sheen when she's older due to her breeding. She's going to a county show next month and then is entered into the highland and will be graded in september so I'm looking forward to seeing how the judges respond to her

Great photo Rachaelh! sarahp, she's out of a KWPN mare by San Remo - www.horsetelex.com//horses/pedigree/144713 and by an Akhal Teke stallion www.allbreedpedigree.com/kambarbayThere was a lot speculation in the sport horse breeding world about this stallion and how crossing with an AT would work however, I hope you would agree that he has added an excellent amount of elegance and blood and that he's a great addition to the sports horse world. His offspring all inherit his typical AT metallic sheen although they're not as OTT shiney as an AT and so they look like you spend hours grooming them a day - excellent

My palomino was first at Scottish horse show and 6th at RHS as a show hack, I had a lot of fun showing her and she certainly stood out!

Very interesting breeding, and a lovely result. I did wonder about Akhal Teke when you mentioned the sheen but not many about I don't think, I've never come across one in the UK!

Hello! Thank you all again for your encouragement. I'm pleased to say that my filly has done well this season, qualifying for the SSH finals to win Scottish National Champion Foal 2014 and then go on to take the overall Reserve Champion. She's turning out to be a really unique colour too, not quite sooty but she does have elements so it will be interesting to see her coat develop! So pleased with her and the judges have been well known names and have also been encouraging about her future. Mare is scanned in foal for a full brother / sister in 2015

Any chance of an updated photo? Sure - apologies for my hair not being in a hairnet, I left it in the car and didn't have time to go back and get it. Turnout was to be for an evening performance and not sports horse, hence our black attire rather than white .

Belfa this post could be by me!!!! Exactly what I've been wondering I too am eagerly awaiting the arrival this autumn of my palomino filly am intrested in showing her in riding horse classes in time but having stood in show ring on Sunday (riding horse my bay mare came 1st ) I just couldn't imagine a palomino in there though I don't see what's stopping them. My fillys event bred and beautifully put together looking fairly neat for her 3 months and showing lovely straight movement her brother is 3 and stood at stud and is the most beautiful pale golden palomino. Whatever happens palomino is likely to be first one noticed and while I'm sure some older more traditional judges will stick to bay this should not make a differance I'm hoping to test the water with her in youngstock classes if she does well we will continue and depending on how well I haven't ruled out having her produced for the show ring failing that id be quite happy doing dressage with her as she will make a fantastic alrounder I bought my girl as my Tb mare is now 23 having enjoyed a successful year showing her think I'm a bit bitten by showing bug as my tbs first proper year out showing due to finally having the time and the old girl being fit and well (she previously jumped but out the question now her legs aren't so good) hopefully we will see you out next year I've already planned out Cheshire for my baby next year as her first big outing in the sports horse breeding
