I have a LR pony which chews his reins, he only does it whilst in the ring or waiting to go in, he is quick and sneaky but has now totalled 2 pairs of reins, he goes straight through the billet, anyone had any experience or any ideas how to stop it costing me a fortune

Have you tried having a bamboo show cane and letting him nibble that or will he likely chew through that as well . Do you think its a nervous thing ? Is he a novice ?

Afraid I can't offer any tips but am watching with interest as I have the same trouble (as anyone who was at the ARCHES show last weekend may have seen!!)

haven't had this problem, but to deter chewers of other things (fences, stable doors) i have put something that tastes horrible on them - really hot chilli sauce etc. a bit messy but if you tried it at home it may deter him!

cribox them and go to a little show to try it out that should work, cribox is what we used on our rugs and wood to stop horses chewing on them or you can put it on his teeth but leave it on 20 minuets or so before going into the ring he probably wont like it but it will work 99% of the time!!!

Have a Shetland that does this and chewed straight through one pair in one bite!! Cribbox or other nasty tasting stuff, mustard, vinegar keep trying on an old pair til you find something he doesn't like!! Dettol worked for a chewing puppy (aga electrics!!!) I'm thinking might try that next for pony!!! He seems to have a taste for spicy things. Little horror!!

Its a nightmare he did these today stood outside the ring in no time he doesn't even mouth on them so when he has them in his mouth you cant tell, wondered weather to try a bit wrap maybe he will leave the reins and chew on that, he has his teeth done regularly so INO its not them bothering him
