just wondering how everyone trims/keeps their horses tails in a nice shape(at the top)? I've tried pulling, cutting and most gadgets and gismos and it still looks a bit like a squirrels tail at the top! need some help Thanks

It's the gadgets causing the trouble. By pulling do you mean actually pulling out by the roots? That is the only way to keep a tail looking smooth. You also need a rug with a tail cover or a tail bandage on a damp tail daily ( not too tight or left on for more than tha time it takes to dry). Once the tail is right pulling a few hairs out on a regular basis is the key. Nothing looks better than a correctly pulled and maintained tail.

A correctly pulled and maintained tail as described is the best way to keep a tail looking good. However, if the owner has a pony that is really objecting to the traditional 'pulled' tail, gadgets can be very useful. Many people use the pulling rake, incorrectly and take too much hair from the middle of the tail giving it the 'squirrel' look after a few weeks. Only use the rake on the sides of the tail to thin the hair into a nice, straight outline., using long strokes and not choppy strokes. Use the rake sparingly down the middle of the tail in long strokes to thin slightly. Using gadgets takes a lot of skill but good results can be obtained with the, rakes, pulling knife etc. I would not use the solo type of gadget on a tail though. Wet the tail and put a bandage on every couple of days to keep the hair in good order. Hope that helps.
