What's people's opinions on the best feeding routine for hard feed to help gain condition. I feed 3 times a day, breakfast, lunch & tea but have heard that a late night feed might be more beneficial but is this right? Was thinking of doing morning between 7am & 8am, tea is usually between 6pm & 7pm and then a late night at 11pm but does it really make any difference? Thanks

I have always found the bedtime feed most beneficial, and the one that really makes a difference.

Horses are designed to be trickle feeders rather than having large meals at intervals, so if you're feeding bucket feed then the more meals you can fit in the better. If you added in a late feed it would help, but I wouldn't have thought that just changing the timings of three would make much difference. If your horse really needs to put on weight I'd look more to increasing the energy supplied by the forage, ie changing from hay to haylage, and making sure he has an ad lib supply.

Thanks...yes he is on good haylage and grass and is getting the recommended amount of hard feed based on his weight. He is a late maturer so probably just need to continue and he'll get there
