Travelled to Aintree last night specifically to watch the Shetland GN Final scheduled for 9pm and also the Open RoR and Championship .. was very disappointed to find on arrival that we had missed the Shetland GN as it had been brought forward by a good few hours :/ However, absolutely delighted to watch the whole of the RoR class and championship and to see our faves take 1st and Champion ... very well done Faye Hesketh and the stunning and composed Flaygray, what a place to win and so happy for you all xxxx
Very well done to all who waited the long hours for the Pony Supreme and well done to the worthy champion, reserve and first reserve

I love this show and enjoy being there but today has completely changed my opinion. The m&m whp ring was in my opinion a shambles. I was in the not exceeding 143cm. I jumped clear and went back to go the go round and show. While stood in the line up I noticed that my lip strap had come undone. So i asked the steward if she would just fasten it up for me. She said as she was a steward in the ring she couldn't but said if I wanted to "pop" off and do it then I could. I said are you sure to which she replied yes. So i did and was off for around 5 seconds max and got back on. I was told by the judge that I was eliminated as it stated in the bsps rule book and had to wait till the end of everything else doing their shows as it was rude to leave. Resulting in him missing his 2nd round olympia qualifier :-( My gripe is as he is a stallion I was not prepared to lean down his neck and attempt to do it up. Although he is a good boy I still would not try it in fear of him spooking and scattering the line up resulting in upset ponies and jockeys. I was given permission to dismount and sort my tack out as I did not wish to leave it as he could of got it in his mouth or anything!! This rule needs looking at as there is no rule which states this as a elimination BSPS 2014 RULE BOOK PAGE 11, Item 42: A fall of pony or rider in any class will result in elimination and rider must leave the class dismounted. You did not fall, you were given permission to dismount to fasten lipstrap ... how very disappointing for you

This rule needs looking at as there is no rule which states this as a elimination This is very unfortunate, sadly if this was under BSPS rules I assume the judge looked on this dismount as a "fall of rider". However the judge if they had know allowed your groom in to the ring to do up the lip strap, or even better the "steward" if they had any compassion could have done it up for you. I would be writing a letter to the BSPS to complain about the incorrect information given to you by a steward. Also the Judge, if they were eliminating you there and then, could have and IMO should have, allowed you to leave immediately. b] 481. Once a Judge has commenced judging a class, a pony may not be taken out of the ring without the permission of the Judge.[/b] I feel very sorry for you

My first time at this show. I thought the pony supreme was a farce. Competitors had waited all day for the supreme (or gone home an come back) only to be blanked by the judge if they were on a M&M pony.
I wont be suprised if numbers are down next year.

Thank you to everyone who has constructive comments about the show at the weekend.
This is the first time that we have split the supreme championships and had them during the evening performances, so we are still learning, trying, and open for improvements.
We have taken your comments on board about letting the Supremes do an individual show next year- this was our decision due to timings not the judges and we will change this next year.
The judge did pull out both M and M and plaiteds and the first reserve was an M and M, but I suppose it all comes down to the judges preference on the night which isn't going to suit everyone. All our Champions at the show were very worthy winners.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported this show, Aintree is relatively new to showing, I personally am from a racing background so am learning all the time - especially about the politics with judges! (It's usually first past the post in the racing game!)
4 years ago we would never of thought we would be at this stage with the show, 2 days, 9 rings, over 350 classes, 2 evening performances and the fact we've managed to persuade the powers that be to let us use the 'hallowed turf' is pretty amazing.
I have the bit between my teeth now and really want to make this show big, more prize money, more sponsors and make Aintree not just a top class Showjumping and dressage venue but also get showing up to top class and we can only do this with your support.
Thank you once again, the emails, messages and letters over the past few days really does make all the hard work make it worth while, with only a very small team.
I would also like to thank all the judges, stewards and volunteers who give up their weekend to help at the show. And a special mention to Rob who meets and greets you as you arrive, bright and breezy at 5am in the morning and still helping us tidy up at midnight. He really is a Legend.
Now to plan the National Show 2015... With a possible new date.
Thank you,
Carly, Aintree

Willows, the judge is a panel judge and has been judging ponies for years and also produced top ponies in her prime. Her son won HOYS a fair few years ago, so she knows exactly what she is doing.
I do hope she doesn't read this forum!!
Media Live took photos by Red Rum and will send me the photos next week :-)

Well speaking personally we had a great day at Aintree. The classes ran to time and we found the organisation to be good. We also had two seconds and a fourth in good company. Thanks to Carly and team

Well done to aintree for organising the show, can't be easy!
One recommendation I would suggest is perhaps an overall inhand ex racehorse supreme separate from the ridden and then maybe an overall for the big prize money.

Another idea we had was for the m&m in hand to be on the same day as the riddens? This would mean we could do both sets of classes!! Could you apply to the bsps for an olympia qualify for the M&Ms maybe there isn't a northern one...

Ditto the above, came on the thread to ask for M&M inhand on day of ridden as would do both. Fantastic show though, really well organised and I'll be coming along next year - change of date as you suggest would be fab as lots of clashes but it'll be so hard to avoid all clashes.

Aintree elimination/BSPS Rules
Yes an unfortunate occurrence, but the Judge's decision is final and was correct because the decision to allow a rider to dismount is the Judge's and not the Steward's. As for the Steward showing 'compassion', would it have been more appropriate for the Steward to have adjusted a rider's tack incorrectly leading to them having a problem or worse getting hurt? That is why a Steward should not and is not permitted to assist in these circumstances, nothing to do with compassion it's a safety issue! Just to clarify, the issue was complicated as the lip strap had already been interfered with by one Steward, and the other Steward was trying to rectify that mistake by suggesting the rider did it himself. This was explained to the Judge but she over ruled the Steward's advice as the rider had not asked for the Judge's permission to dismount. Harsh, but correct. In many instances the Judge would have overlooked the Steward's error, but this time the Judge was perfectly correct and applied the rule book to the letter. Incidentally, another competitor was also eliminated for dismounting in the ring without asking for the Judge's permission and the Steward wasn't involved apart from to tell the competitor the Judge had instructed them to leave the ring on foot. I understand a few years ago a competitor was eliminated at HOYS as a Steward (and they are usually Panel Judges who Steward there) adjusted a piece of tack for them and afterwards a formal complaint was lodged by another competitor, so everyone can make mistakes. Better it to have happened at this level and learn from the experience than for it to happen at HOYS or an important qualifier.
