Just wondering what size your Section C's where when they were foals and what size they are now? My Section C is 15 months and I feel she's going to overgrow She is the chestnut with my 14hh pony to see the size of her.

We had one which was 12.1 at 18months, and is still only 12.2 now at 8 years. She was fed up as youngster, not sure if that could make a difference?

Could do, but more likely genetic. I've bred Cs and Ds from the same 14hh mare from 12.3 to 15.1 but by various different stallions. The Cs though did grow early, usually 13.1 as yearlings, and then just went outwards and stayed under height. I didn't really notice how the Ds grew as it didn't matter with no section height limit! Others may stay small and then grow later - I bought a D x TB that was 15.1 1/2 at 4 1/2 yo that grew another two inches after that.

Thanks guys, gives me a bit of hope she'll stay a C as her mum and dad were both C's and she's really shot up since I've had her. I know she's going to be a chunk so hopefully she'll start growing outwards rather than upwards soon.

I have seen fell ponies and by the time they are 18-24 month they are about 13hh and usually make 13.2-13.3 when they are fully grown

I once bought 2 Shetland ponies, full brothers. The oldest at 4yo was about 39" high, his younger brother at 2yo was already full up 42". Over the next few years the older boy managed to gain another half inch or so and remained quite slight, while his young brother stayed at 42" (thank goodness!) but matured into a very substantial chap. On the other hand I thought our baby C was going to be quite a tiddler as he stood about 12.2/12.3 at 3 years old. He's 4yo now and a good 13.1hh. He's going to be a proper chunk too as he matures. Foal Yearling 2yo 3yo 4yo

Thanks missynx I love looking at the photos of him growing up - he didn't have go through some awkward stages lol! I think he's balanced out nicely now, and we're getting ready to start working properly with him. He's been sat on as you can see, but we're waiting to get his wolf teeth removed next week before bitting him. We'll do a bit of work with him this year then turn him away for winter and bring him into full work next year. Hopefully he'll be out hunting next season - he's very laid back so I think he'll make a good hunter - don't like them fizzy!

Aw what a cutie! It's lovely having them from babies isn't it. It's been a long wait for our lad to grow up, but I feel he's finally ready now.

Mine was about 12hh as a yearling and is now 13hh as a 4.5 year old. There is an old wives tale that says if you measure somewhere on the fore leg it gives you an expected measurement when full grown. Not sure how much truth is in it, but I measured mine as a 2 year old and the expected height was 13.1 so it's not too far off on my pony.

Yeah I've heard that, from fetlock to knee. I'll measure her tomorrow to see.

I usually judge my Section C foals by the length of the cannon bone. It seems this bone does not lengthen. I look to see if that's the same length as mum's and you get a good idea of what mature height will be.I usually look at height of the knee joint. My present foal looks like she'll be taller than her 13.1 mum and she does look long legged. I expect her to be 13.2 at maturity.
