How much are people paying for a trim? My farrier has just increased his price to £35 from £30 is this what others are paying? I have several ponies so it's worth his while to come

I suppose it depends on your area. I am in Somerset and my farrier, who is also a remedial farrier for my vet, charges £14 for a pony trim but I always pay him £20 as I think that is a fair price and it gives me some leverage when I want some emergency treatment. He always turns up on time, sends me a bill same day by e-mail and has payment on line facility so no cash handling. I think £35 is excessive for a trim, what on earth is he charging for a set of shoes then?

I am going to phone around as it does seem too high, I have used for years but to go up 15 per cent is to much

Don't blame you Janet. I know it is nice to build a relationship up with your farrier, if they look after you as a customer. In your case there seems no waiver, for the fact you have been a long standing customer with him. Loyalty works both ways.

I'm envious! Over here you're hard pressed to find a trim below 30 Euros. In some areas they charge up to 40 Euros (this is more urban than we are). I do however wonder how farriers can make a living charging only 15 GPB. Provided a trim with a well mannered horse easily takes 10 Minutes minimum and most of the time they also have to work on youngsters and/or unruly ones that will not stand and/or even need sedation (waiting time) plus they have to get there and away there isn't much of an hourly wage remaining?

I pay £25 for a trim, plus £15 travelling - this is a discounted rate as there is half a day's work here for trims or more if anything is shod, I think standard travelling is £25. There is VAT on top of all of that, which would make a trim £30, but I reclaim that.

Its no wonder seeing some of the prices people are paying that ponies/ horses are neglected when it comes to trimming etc! £35 for a trim is extortion!!! My farrier came last night . shod my 14,2 front 2 plates, trimmed the backs and trimmed my 4 yr old all round , the bill £50 ....he took over an hour to do the 14.2 as he adapts her plates to fit correctly! I think we get fantastic value for money! I will remember to tip him very generously this xmas!

£20 for a trim - can't believe that in the South East I may actually be paying less than many other parts of the country! That said, we are on a livery yard and the farrier does all the liveries...

I pay £58 for my two. The clyde is £33 (you always get charged more for a heavy horse) and the cob is £25. My farrier is not the cheapest, but he always turns up on time and does a very good job, and takes about 45 minutes to do both of them. I need to have them trimmed every 8 - 10 weeks. He also takes off the ergots for me. I am in Abridge, Essex

High charges apply to lots of horse related essentials. I had a small yearling put down by my vet after an accident and then collected by my own knacker and it was £370!! My farrier who is excellent and comes quickly and always on time charges £20 per pony. My old farrier charged £8 !!! Not reliable though and did not use a mobile. I am surprised some charge mileage.

In my area in kent the average seems to be £20. Our farrier charges a bit more. £25 for a trim and his shod prices are the most expensive ive seen locally but he has a good reputation and is excellent with the horses and special fits. So to me its worth the expense. I think a £35 trim does sound alot but if your happy with him then its not worth searching for cheaper in my opinion.
