Hi All
I have been thinking for a good while now that I would really enjoy organising and running a show or maybe 2 in the year. As I have been showing for many years it is something that I have really wanted to do and always took my time to pay attention at shows what works and what doesn't, Quite a lot of shows don't hold a lot of classes that they could which I believe would draw more people to them, welsh classes clashing I know is a big problem for a lot of people I know as they like to do the inhand and ridden so this again would mean interest to more people and I have many many more ideas too for schedule, thought about Societies bringing in, good judges, trying to get qualifiers, medal rosettes and great prizes/ rosettes / sashes, sponsorships, and not holding the show when all main county shows are on as it will not be greatly supported.
These are just a few ideas that I have put down but I have so many more its like a brain storm when I get going just keep putting ideas down. Already been emailing and receiving quotes about venues, catering, prizes, sponsors, wanting to hopefully get equifest quals and wpcs bronze medal rosette and ridden performance medal but want to prove that the show is worth these as all new to this area wanting and getting for the first show may be a bit difficult.
Has anyone ever organised their own show? Would love to know how you got started and if it worked out well, as I said this is something I wanted to do for a very long time so just wanted a bit of guidance if you think its a good idea or should it be left for the big societies to do so.
Thank you

Have you experience in running events? Hows your organisational skills. If not Id steer well clear, you need to be superwoman with a lot of contacts who won't let you down on the day. You will always get moaners and complainers and if you can run a show where no ones classes clash I take my hat off to you! My partner runs a lot of fund raisers, I put to him that Id like to run a show and his response was.....'Id rather stick pins in my eyes' Anyway don't let me put you off, if you do pull it off all credit to you, life needs do-ers.

Hi no have had experience in running charity events but never a horse show but being around them for so many years its something I've always wanted to do to hold an annual or twice a year show. I know it is going to be hard definitely, pins in my eyes doesn't sound fun. We are currently going through a list of what needs to be booked, hired, ordered, made up. We are working on a budget really to keep down and we want to donate to charity as I think horse shows are always good to earn money for this and to get people together. Sponsors too we are getting a list together of who we are going to ask and local shops to sponsor a class trying to look at the moment at what people charge for sponsorship for a class thinking around £15-£20 up to now by the looks. Started to receive good quotes from venues, and rosette companies as people will come for a good schedule, venue and very nice and BIG rosettes and sashes ( We Hope lol ) Thank you very much for your reply

Obviously you need to pick a day that doesnt clash with other things in your area which is hard. Events tend to take a while to pick up, have you got a venue in mind? That's one of the biggest costs as are loos! Dont forget first aid costs too.

Yes yes asked for a quotes for a few venues now and they all have built in toilets pheww, for first aiders I am currently reading up on who is best I am not seeing good thing about St Johns a lot of people say they do not turn up so looking toward British red cross. Had quotes from Caterers, need to look down the road of insurance too going to ask the venues who they recommend I think. And yeah looking towards April-May do not want the big county shows on as then will get poor turnout so looking for then had a look to see what was on this year in April looks quite positive to hold one that month.

I sorted the sponsorship for a show earlier this year. I sent lots of letters out to various local shops and organisations and tbh not many replied! Most of the sponsorship came from horsey friends on facebook along with people and businesses who I know. Best advice for sponsorship start early and make sure they send you the money!
Have a backup plan for the venue incase the weather is bad in April.
Dont try and run too many classes at your first show - see how it goes you can always add more classes if you have another one. Dont try and do it all yourself get a little committee and give everyone a job. Get a few quotes for everything, catering, rosettes, toilets, insurance etc. Sort out your judges in plenty of time. Good luck

make sure you do your sums, judges, stewards, helpers, first aid, rosettes, insurance, venue hire it all adds up, i started a show up with my friend and we have run for 2 years successfully now but to do it right is very time consuming and hard work so make sure you have lots of willing helpers especially on the day. It can be done but it's not easy and there is not a lot to gain financially it needs to be done for the love of it but we always need good shows so good luck

If you are raising money for charity, choose the charity carefully - people WILL pick and choose which charities they support. One charity show near me has banners up at the entrance for the charity in question and people unrelated to the show have been known to pull over and donate as it's such a worthy cause. It is extremely well supported.
Compare that to a show in support of another local charity whereby those running the charity have made themselves unpopular with some people over the years and the level of support drops off enormously as people boycott the event.

Thank you everyone and yes we have a few charities in mind but want to start planning early to try and raise as much as possible, also for sponsors yes going to ask friends businesses, local farms and shops see how much luck we get, thank you everyone its nice to see a positive response, we want to be open to all and have a very nice atmosphere as nothing worse than going to a show with no atmosphere so fingers crossed, for first show yes we are going to play safe with classes and not overload ourselves with a ridiculous amount but we are hoping with all this planning and ahead thinking we pull off and can hold a really good day x
