A recent event has really made me realise that all the petty things surrounding showing really is not important, winning isn't important, qualifying hoys or ri isn't important. A few days ago, someone who suffers with severe cystic fibrosis came to the yard with her small children who wanted to ride a pony, they had a little sit on one of the small ponies and were happy. I had just tacked up my section D who competes in hoys workers, the lady was desperate to ride, she hadn't ridden for 10 years as her health deteriorated drastically after her first child, she has spent a long period of time since, in hospital. Her parents were very worried that if she were to ride it would make her very ill, she is currently one of the oldest survivors of this illness- but isn't expected to live much longer. She pleaded to her parents to let her ride, they reluctantly let her, so I said she could ride my D, it was one of the most heart warming moments of my life, as soon as the girl got on, he instantly knew she was ill, she started coughing badly, when she got her breath she walked him round for a few minutes, by this point, her mum was in tears, she asked him for a little trot and he totally looked after her, it didn't take long for her to get quite out of breath and have to bring him back to walk. Nevertheless, she didn't stop beaming the whole time, it has been the highlight of my year, im so proud that my pony, has made someone so so happy, it sounds like such an insignificant thing, but I felt so emotional, and still do. Horses truly are remarkable creatures, they know when they need to come down a gear for someone.
It really makes you think about the silly things we get annoyed about showing, but we forget how much some people just dream about being able to just sit on a horse. Its really changed my view on things, never again will I wind myself up about the showing lark, because there really is more to horses than going to hoys.
