Help does anybody else have a horse that's allergic to any type of shampoo and comes out in an allergic dermatitis that makes all the hair and skin drop off , to add insult to injury he's coloured and mainly white which is a nightmare , it only happens when he's bathed the day before and then ridden the next day and sweats then he starts to swell up his back bleeds and neck and round his stifle it takes forever to get rid of and the vets have recommended keeping him on a ow dose of steroids but I'm not keen is there any other washes that I could use on him that won't do this ?

I have a black and white traditional(mainly white). He is allergic to horse shampoos and comes out in hives and large lumps if used. He is washed with Non bio Persil liquid and supermarket own label conditioner on his mane, tail and feathers. I use minimal chalk as this makes him itch too but this gets him clean enough and he does not really need it.

Maybe a good idea to buy a Horse Hot Shower so you can rinse all the stuff out really well rather than use Hose it off with cold water ?

Not totally horse related but worth a possibility worth investigating - I found out by accident earlier this year after a few years of thinking I had a food allergy, that I'm actually allergic to a preservative that is found in many shampoos, shower gels, baby wipes etc. They brought me out in hives, an itchy rash on my head (at one point I was convinced I had nits!!!) and my hair started to go thinner/drop out. The preservative is called methylisothiazolinone or MI for short. It can also be mixed with Methylchloroisothiazolinone. After much research and ages spent obsessively reading ingredients on shampoos etc in the shops, I found that Timotei shampoo and conditioner and all Body Shop shampoos etc are free from such nasties and my problem instantly stopped, never had an outbreak since. HOWEVER, I used a horse shampoo on one of the ponies and I came out in hives up my arms so it got me thinking, if this preservative is in human products then it must be in some equine ones as well, although the equine ones don't always have a list of ingredients in them.
Maybe check your ingredients if you can or even try Timotei/Body Shop shampoos (that may seem expensive but when you think of price of horsey products it probably isn't!). It may be that your horse is allergic to something in the shampoo like I was. Timotei is dead cheap though!
Hope that helps, though it might seem bizarre X
