Which insurance company would people recommend to insure a four year old pony and who is best avoided . I know there is one that is meant to be really bad at paying out but I can't remember which company it is . Thanks

I think the company that is bad at paying out is called E&L (or something similar)
I chose Petplan because they have categories of insurance dependant on horse activity so I pay only £11 a month for my yearling compared to £22 for my five year old. The biggest decider for me was that my vet will deal direct with Petplan which means less hassle for me and no finding money and having to claim it back.
Vets cannot recommend insurance (at least mine say they can't) but if you ask enough yes/no questions you can find out who they are happy to deal direct with. To me if they won't deal direct I would be wondering why!

NFU all the way, more costly than some but you gets what you pay for, hassle free claims!

Most premiums can be reduced considerably if you remove 3rd party liability. I use NFU for death /straying/ loss ( not vet) and also pay a yearly membership to World Horse Welfare and get all my Welsh ponies(6) covered for a reasonable low rate.( £1 a week for all) BHS does the same indemnifies its members for 3rd party ( that's where the big claims can come from) Vet fees considerably increase a premium . I think NFU are good.

i have used Stoneways for many years now, i have had a few claims, some big, some small and a third party claim, they have paid out for each claim with no argument or delays, also the ladies on the phone are some of the nicest i have ever dealt with. highly recommend

i have three insured with E+L , and over the last 6yrs i have made 5 BIG claims , and they have paid out each time without any problem , i have heard that people have had problems with them , but i have to say that they have been extremely good as far as im concerned , NFU on the other hand with a 4th pony have been a pain in the backside ,and have not paid out !!!!!

Our vet won't deal direct with E&L. We always use Petplan or NFU but have the dog insured with Animal Friends so would also consider them in future.

I also had issues with NFU when I made a claim. I had rider insurance for my daughter and they took 11 months to pay out. Not only that, they wouldn't have paid out had my daughter had the accident on her own pony. Three times I had to put the claim in as they kept saying they lost it. The GP wasn't impressed as he had to fill in a part of it and sign it every time. If they lost it again he told them that he would start charging them for having to fill it in repeatedly.

Animal Friends are no longer a subsidiary of E &. They are now underwritten by someone else.

i have to say that imo a payout is only as good as the claim put in , we are very lucky that our vet deals directly with all our claims , and they divulge every little detail , that does mean that we get exclusions , but all insurance co do that, and whilst E+L arent their favourite co , they have both been honest and up front , as i said before i have had large claims ,imo , without problems !!!

I've had big claims with both NFU and Pet Plan and both were paid promptly and without any trouble, only downside I found with NFU is my premium doubled and they excluded the whole leg whereas my pet plan premium has remained the same and they have only excluded the part of the leg which I claimed for.

I have both my ponies and dogs insured with Petplan and have for many years. I have had a couple of big claims for the ponies and they have been dealt with very quickly and without any fuss. My dog now has chronic liver disease and they have been paying my claims for the past year without trouble. I have just received my dogs new premium and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised as I did think it would have gone up considerably as this claim will be going in every 3 months for the rest of his life. Its not the cheapest but I have been very satisfied with them and wouldnt change.
