there was a clear round working hunter practice night last night for the champs on Saturday which I couldnt attend as I was working, so am shocked to see on facebook this morning that a local producer has hired the course this morning to practise on taking a group with him. Surely this is unfair on the other competitors i have contacted Croft Top with a view to hiring myself ahead of saturday but was told that I couldnt do this and the arena was privately hired. When I asked when it was advertised that you could privately hire with the working hunter jumps I was told that it wasnt advertised and that they had just rang. I told them that if I would have known at the time when the producer booked this I would also have booked half an hour privately. My interpretation of clear round is that you pay your £5 and have a go round, not have the time to practise and practise a jump if necessary or have a lesson using the championship jumps. I have already pre-entered and was really looking forward to taking my horse but just feel that this is giving this group an unfair advantage over everyone else? what do you think?

I just think they have all their ducks in a row, good for them, its not an unfair advantage, just an advantage, get over it. In their position I would have done the same, and in the past, when competing and able to hire an arena and show jumps or use the cross country course at a venue I would compete at - I did.

The course will be totally different on saturday! Trust me! We went to the practice night last year and flew round the 75cm , we didnt even get round the Novice on the day due to a very tough course with miles more fillers and tight turns etc...

Hats off to them. This is why ( there are many other reasons too) why producers are good - it's their job and livelihood. They prepare, travel to practise indoors over courses etc. they network and know who and how to contact to make sure their animals / clients are as prepared as best as possible. It's really no different to me researching and preparing for a meeting at work ( office job)

Thank you ponymum i am really looking forward to taking my boy tomorrow, am disappointed as this is not an affiliated show, perhaps this is why showing class numbers are so low, with money being tight people simply do not just want to make the numbers up. I agree producers are the best of the best and the horses they produce are a joy to watch and learn from, next year I think I will do more show jumping and dressage and leave showing to the producers

If it had been joe public hiring it for a group would you complain?? They are practising, theyve as much right as anyone to hire a school with jumps. You now know you can do it! Sounds like you're cross because you couldn't. Most people will use a cross country course, hire an indoor etc. as has been said the course will change anyway.

Go and enjoy yourself with your pony. Just because these people have had a jump round it doesn't mean they'll go clear tomorrow. Trust me it's a whole different environment and their horses and ponies and in fact even the jockeys may not be up for it. Good luck

I would think the practice was to give ponies and horses the feel of jumping indoors @ Croft Top following a season of outdoor workers
I watched a couple of videos of peeps jumping their practice rounds and can confirm that the course on the actual day of the show was FAR more challenging than the practice course
This is a beautifully-run show by happy and helpful people and the classes have been full to busting, for example, the novice m&m whps yesterday had 41 entries and apparently the in-hand and ridden Welsh D's on their showing days had the same high numbers and the evening performances ran well on into the night
Very pleased with our own Welsh D, Larnleighs Dictator (Ernie) who jumped clear in each of his classes and was 2nd Open Pony WH and 4th Open M&M WHP, not bad for a proper novice and no, he did not have a pre-practice
Well done Croft Top and all who attended these marvellous champs!

Op i think maybe you should get your facts straight a friend of ours actually hired the arena with jumps to take a couple of novices up as they hadnt ever jumped a course away from home ,another friend took his novice along for said producer to ride for a practice as he was invited when they found due to shift work he couldnt go in the evening ,you can hire croft top almost any time when it isnt already booked along with jumps ect so why not just ring and book it yourself next time .
