Has anyone got any advice for the show ring, my pony behaves and schools so well at home but as soon as we go to a show when he's in his class he gets a bit giddy, bit strong and fast! Bearing in mind he's 18 and we've only done a few shows over summer.. I've had him 5 years and he's previously done showing. Just not that much with me. Anyone else have this problem or could give me some advice on thanks!

Hi - I think you were on the same row as us at CSL in the stabling - did he get a bit strong inside when doing his show?

Hello! Was I? Yeah he was awful haha, it's the worst he's ever been don't think it helped that it was inside and so busy and it was windy but it's such a shame when he goes so well at home it's really annoying! He's not too bad when it's outside but on the go around he just gets giddy and it's embaressing! I don't know whether he needs to get used to going out more he hasn't been out that much this summer..

At least he went out and did a show, ours got stage fright LOL - pulled top and then didnt perform!! Ha ha , the joys of showing. Do you get chance to go to any clinics, or ride in company at lessons, I think that would probably help as much as anything! It's very hard when you ride at home on your own to recreate what is going on in the ring, but if you could get to some clinics, I am sure that would help. Good luck with him!

Haha they are a nightmare sometimes! He wouldn't stop at the end of his show! he cantered round again and as soon as we left the ring he went perfect outside the little sod!! You'd think at 18! He'd have calmed down but oh no.. Thank you I will have a look into that I think he needs other horses in the arena when I ride him so will also have a go at that too! Thanks for your help xx

You could try doing some dressage with him where there is only him in the ring and if he is sensible at home where there is only him in the arena he might just enjoy doing something where there is no other ponies in with him, also it is a lot more quieter!

Agree with doing dressage so he doesn't anticipate. Teach him to leg yield/shoulder in as this makes them listen to you and they have to steady up to do it rather than pulling you around, then in the ring you can do a tiny bit of lateral in the ring on the go round and even in your show to steady him up and make him listen. Also, changing the flexion from left to right makes them concentrate. This is what I did at countryside live and any other big show as the pony I ride gets excited and holding on to his mouth just makes him tense and giddy. Also, try riding a small circle and if you're in a big ring, really keep in your own space.

I found when doing ridden showing that riding one that will leg yield is also very useful at times to get out of trouble in a crowded ring! Not everyone was always as polite and considerate as they might have been. Keeping in your own space is a good thing too, nothing worse than trying to ride a fizzy one in the midst of a scrum.
