I have an aged horse who suffers from seizures which are worse in the winter when stabled. I am contemplating having her put to sleep before she seriously injurs herself or someone else. On her first week of coming in at night she had had 3 seizures that we know of and I am continuing to monitor them. She has suffered minor injuries and often falls over during them but is otherwise generally well, alert and holds her weight. What would you do? Couldn't live with myself if something awful happened and she had to be pts after getting wedged somewhere or worse. I just want to do the best for my baby xxx

If she was mine I'd have her pts to avoid future possible suffering.

I also think the kindest thing would be to let her go. you would never forgive yourself if something terrible happened. I think you are making the right decision. Xx

It is never easy to let a friend go but, as their caregivers, we have to do what is best for them.
I had to have my 27 yr old PTS'd two weeks ago; we had been buds for 24 years. I have 55 years of owning horses and he is the 4th I have had to PTS. It was every bit as unpleasant as the first horse was, all those years ago.
I had no choice and held my best friend's head during the process.
I carried him with meds 2-1/2 years longer than the vets at the facility ever thought possible. Their words to me were to keep reminding myself of that.
It won't be an easy task for you but it's better your heart suffers for a time, than your best friend gets down in the stall, gets hurt and perhaps nobody would be around to help. Send her on to her ancestors with dignity:)

My cat had a seizure on the Friday morning and went to the vet Friday night. She said to monitor the situation and not to medicate. By the Tuesday evening I came home from work to a terrible scene. If any others started having seizures I wouldn't hesitate to PTS now as I would never want another to suffer. I would also go against vet and not monitor/ medicate for seizures. The best thing we can do for them is ensure they have a happy life with little pain and "no traumatic events". Feel for you xx

About 5yrs ago i made the very hard decison to have my whippet x PTS , he was 19yrs old , and i had had him from 6 weeks old , he had a grade 5 heart murmer (6 being the worst ) and one evening i wasnt happy with how he was , he looked sad , i checked him again at 9.30pm , and made the decision there and then that he had to be pts , i rang the vets to say i was on my way, he jumped in the car quite ok , jumped out the car the other end , toddled into the surgery (10.30pm)and the vet quizzed me as to my decision ,i explained about his heart , which he then listened to , and agreed that it was bad, but they could put him in an oxygen tent , and give him drugs to help him ,,, but i explained that at his age , and heart condition , they couldnt mend him , and i wasnt prepared to come down in the morning to the kitchen and find that he had had a heart attack , and died on his own , with no one to help him, it was my responsibility to look after him , and after 19 yrs i said goodbye to him , as hard as it was i knew it was the right decision, the worst situation would be that your girlie had a siezure in the night and your not there to help , what imtrying to say is perhaps have her PTS alittle too early , than a little to late , and then have to live with regrets and guilt , my heart goes out to you sx

Hi - I feel for you. I made this decision under similar circumstances. Wouldn't allow her to go into the winter. Years later, I still feel it was absolutely the correct decision and I have never had any regrets. She was the love of my life and it was hard to let her go.
