I remember trying to do a clear round at a local gymkana on my childhood pony who was a cow bag to get over jumps..... She wouldn't turn to the next jump when I asked her and she was suddenly faced with the rope fencing......which she decided to jump... Into the next ring! However the class in this ring was an inhand class....the exit was the far end of the ring. So I had to walk her across the ring to leave. Never been so embrassed in my life competing horses lol. This will have been about 25 years ago *cough cough*

At the first show I took my first "jumping pony" to, she wouldn't turn and jumped out of the clear round ring over the rope fencing not once but twice lol!
She was my forever pony though and I loved her to bits. Having her pts was the worst decision I ever had to make.

That was the judge I just love that judge he looks so grim. But in those days most of us feared the very strict pony people who ran shows and riding schools. My absolute hero was David Broome and I am glad to say I now live near to him ( well other side of the Severn !!)and would still love to meet him. A proper horseman! Who remembers Sunsalve? Wonderful thread.

I remember going to Wembley to watch the Horse of the Year show in the early 80's, the warm up arena for the show jumpers was penned off with high wire mesh so you could stand and watch. Eddie Macken was riding round with a f*g hanging out of his mouth and David Broome on Mr Ross was warming in, as he passed by I slipped my hand through the fencing to stroke his horse and missed stroking his leg instead !
So proud !
Sunsalve was slightly before my time, I loved Philco and had a big poster up on my bedroom wall, but my No.1 all time hero was Ryans Son

I remember Sunsalve! I think many of those running pony stuff in the 50s were ex-services so used to discipline, and the PC Manual of Horsemanship was based on the Army care of horses.
I remember Marius too - wonderful jumping stallion and ahead of his time in being a continental WB - very little used at stud as many thought a top class SJer was born a freak, not produced through breeding. No we know better!

When Birchinley Manor opened in the early nineties John Whitaker brought Milton to a few shows. One evening John's groom let my sister up the horsebox ramp to stroke Milton. Some grey hairs came off on her sleeve and she came into the office, got some sellotape and stuck them on a sheer of paper. She told me not long ago that she still has that sheet of paper!!
Loved Birchinley when Mike Fenton was there, we had some top class jumping and some stars came to those shows.

A few lovely facts about Milton: - He was show jumpings first millionaire earning £1.25m Owned by the Bradley family all his life, who kept him in honour of their daughter Caroline even though they were often offered huge sums of money for him At the prize giving after winning the World Cup Finals in Gothenburg 1991, John had him do a levade to the crowd

Yes,no hat and sandals. It would have been 1956 I think. I hate to think of the money I have spent on horses since.!
