Hi! I am just looking for any ideas about what may possibly be wrong with my pony. He is a 8 year old, 14.1hh ClydsedaleX Welsh pony. Sometimes he comes in feeling very under the weather- he can be very breathless and sweaty just walking from his stable to the school- to the point where it looks like he has been out hunting for ages. He sometimes doesn't eat and can be quite submissive to other horses (he is usually the most dominant in his field). He usually returns to normal by the next day. This can happen 3 times in one week or can be months between 'episodes' and there seems to be no pattern to it. The vet has been out a number of times, both including during and after an episode, have taken blood tests and checked all his vital signs etc. but can't find anything- bloods all came back completely normal. I'm just looking for ideas of maybe what is up with him and maybe if there is a suggestion on how to help him! Thank you in advance!

Could be encysted red worms emerging? Have you noticed which months this is happening in and for how long it's been going on?are there any plants/trees in his field which he could be eating?

We've tested for worms and his worming has been kept up to date. We have checked the field and can't seem to find any plants or anything. He is allergic to certain types of grass but he tends to react to that with swollen glands. The months tend to vary and I can't seem to find any pattern at all. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Also, I first noticed it at the start of this year, so January time.

Has there been any new arrivals that may be trying to assert their dominance over him or even existing ones that my be trying to take over?

There have been a couple of new ones since it started but they have all been after the first couple of times and all but one have been really quiet submissive one- the other was quite dominant but he only went out into the field a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for the suggestion but the vet seems to have ruled out colic as he doesn't seem to be in any pain as usually has quite a low pain threshold!

how is the pattern? Are the spaces of time between episodes speeding up? I would consider a problem with the piturity gland as this controls both the body tempreture and hormone balance, you would think that he was suffering from hot flushes and an increase of eastorone and reduction of testosterone . This is a stab in the dark but something I would meantion to your vet

It's not really speeding up- the episodes seem to change completely, as in twice in a week and then not another one for a month then 2 the next month and so on. That's actually a good suggestion as he does get really hot and now that I think about it there have been times when he's been shivering when it hasn't been that cold! I'll mention it to the vet and see what she says! Thank you very much! Hopefully this will get us closer to getting to the bottom of it!

Has he had tests on his heart? Heart disease can cause shortness of breath, sweating, nausea and lethargy in people. If he has problems with his heart then his lungs wont get sufficient oxygen causing the breathlessness. His heart will be beating harder to provide the oxygen causing the excessive sweating. He wont have the energy to be dominant. His episodes could be angina attacks. Angina attacks can give a feeling of indigestion so that would put him off his food. Could also explain why there is no pattern to them. This is another stab in the dark too but Id want scans on his heart even just to rule it out.

His heart was mentioned at the start but then wasn't mentioned again so I just assumed it wasn't that. But thanks! I'll bring that up as well and get him scanned!
