Got a couple of connies who come in at night. I've noticed lately that one is looking all bright eyed and alert when I turn them out first thing and the other is looking sleepy/weary/lethargic. He is ready to come back in some days as soon as they are out!! Anyone else's ponies like this? I should add they haven't got any real useful grazing to speak of, our ground is clay. However I do turn them out with plenty of hay. Forgot to mention he is only 7.

I have 4 that all do this when i put them out in the morning, i think its just the fact that we have such poor winter grazing and they know there is hay in the stables waiting for them when they come in. As i drive off they have usually ventured into the middle of the field and are grazing on what grass we have. I think its important to get them out daily though, our big connie gets really fizzy to ride if he is kept in for longer than a day x

My connie came in the other day just stood with his head down, felt warmer to touch! Decided to get vet as as he is normally happier! Temp was 40.5 raised heart rate, abdominal sounds less than normal. Vet did abdominal tap and he was found to have peritonitis . Is now on very high doses of antibiotics and rest for at least a month!! Vet thinks the cause could have been due to me worming a few weeks ago and the encysted red worm that wasn't killed had been kick started! I have only owned him since September and he is my pony of a lifetime .
