My beautiful 6 year old Connie has recently had a large ulcerated melanoma removed from his tail and two smaller ones on his buttocks under his tail. While at the vets one of the nurses noticed a large lump on his right pastern just bellow fetlock joint. He has a lot of feathers and is not easy to clip hence they have been left on. It is not painful and he is completely sound, and hasn't affected his action although looks like it will impinge on his fetlock joint, although hasn't been worked for a week due to surgery on his tail. I have a very experienced trainer and she has both seen me ride and ridden him herself. I had my farrier look at him again and he is adamant he would have spotted it if it was there when he last shod him 6 weeks ago. The vet seemed to think it could be another melanoma, but has never seen one in this position before. He is under the care of pool house equine clinic, so expert care. They recommended monitoring and scan it in the spring, just wondering if someone has some advice, I'm worried sick about my poor boy. Can a melanoma develop that quickly? Has any one had anything similar? Thank you

I had a Connie some years ago who developed a lump on its pastern, but had not had any other lumps or bumps previously. I had it removed because of showing -( she actually went the dressage route in the end, so I needn't have had it done on that account lol!! ) It remained for several months before I decided to have the op. The vets were not keen to do the op, as there are so many blood vessels in the area, but all was well, and it turned out to be just a lump of nothing malignant or nasty. I do recall it seemed to appear out of nowhere almost overnight - and we decided she must have bumped it or possibly been lying down and rested the pastern on the edge of her other front hoof. She wasn't shod though. Never got to the bottom of the cause, but general consensus of opinion was that it would not have been a problem - I hope yours turns out to be the same, and causes no problems either - Fingers X'd for you.
