I loaned my boy out a couple of months back to what I thought was a perfect home. I drew up a contract which basically said I could take him back if I believed he wasn't having the right care etc. amongst other things, however, every time I've spoken to the bloke who has him he complains about my horse being naughty which is so out of character so I've told him if he's not happy he can return him but then he says it's fine and they'll try something else with him. He says he's had his back, teeth & tack checked and all's fine. He's on lwvtb and I'm worried that he's going to ruin him and he'll be unsaleable if he returns him at the end of the loan (4 months to go!). My horse is doing things he's never done before so I believe he's not happy. Where do I stand if I want to go and collect him? Can I do this as he's not neglected? He's a good 4 hours away so I can't just pop to see him. I delivered him so know the place is ok and have a friend who sees him now and again when he's turned out so I know he's looked after. Any advice would be appreciated but please no lectures about loaning as personal circumstances meant I had no choice, thanks.

I think you must make the time to go and see him ti find out what is happening. Perhaps he is unsettled, perhaps he has something wrong, or perhaps the buyers want to knock a load of money off his purchase price and are paving the way. I think you have to go and find out what is happening.

I'd just go and get him if I was you, he may not be neglected but certainly doesn't sound happy

I think you have to go and find out what is happening. I agree with this. They may well think that as you are so far away you will just say oh ok ill knock x amount off. Personally id be going down and discussing it. If you feel you are still not happy tell them you dont feel he is suitable for them or they for him, offer to pay for any treatments he has had ie back, teeth etc (only on providing reciepts I hasten to add!!) You know your pony, go with your gut instinct.

I would go and get him, go with your gut feeling. You state your contract said you can take back if not receiving correct care and I think the change in his behaviour can be classed as the same. Sounds like you are worried and you want him back - you are in your rights, you own him.

You have to go with your gut feeling. You are entitled to visit, discuss your concerns. Loan with view to buy, is a lot different than a long term loan.
