Hi. recently purchased a lovely little chap who was servery lacking condition. He has been clipped out, wormed had teeth and health check and is getting better slowly. He is currently on a mixture of things...
2 x feeds a day
1 large scoop of dengi healthy tummy 1 large scoop of soaked readymash extra with small scoop of soaked fiber beat. 1/2 scoop of NAF balancer pellets.
He doesn't really get het up with feed but i am monitoring this as he can be cheeky.
Just after some advice on what others feed for condition/ weight gain.
Want to avoid alfa A oil as heard mixed review of horses going silly on this.
He is worked lightly 3 times a week and it a heavy stamp 13.2 gypsy cob.
Thanks

I've tried a few things but by far the most startlingly noticeable difference came from feeding Copra Coolstance
What works for one doesn't necessarily work for another though I guess.....

Ive been using Calm and Condition on my Section D who lacked abit of condition, seems to be doing the trick. With that he has a scoop of Alfa A, abit of garlic powder and some brewers yeast.

We use snaffles no.1 equine supplement it is fantastic plus calm and condition
Snaffles was the only thing which made one of our mares put on weight couldn't understand. She lost so much weight so quickly and then wouldn't put any more on. Was completely normal eatting up being her normal self etc but snaffles worked.
Since using it on her we have been using it on our stallions and normally the bungee from fat to thin during spring however the snaffle has made the jump not so big or noticeable they also seem a lot happier on it

How long have you had him as it takes a while to build them up. How old also? Is he very poor with ribs showing or just a bit underweight? Is the Ready Mash from Rowen Barbary cos I used that on a starved mare and it was wonderful.Gentle but effective. Took 4/6 weeks but best to take it gradually. What about high fibre nuts?

Also, you haven't mentioned what other food he has. Grazing? Hay? I would go for maximum bulk as well as the additional feed. Loads of fibre and oil should do the trick. But yes, as gilbertgrape says, a little more information on age/history would be useful. Also, as he is clipped, do you think he is warm enough/

THanks for you help. I got him beginning of November and his ribs and tail bone were showing however i just want to be clear the lady i got him from didnt get him into this state she saved him from a sorry state and loved him to bits he was so wooly he was constantly too hot, dripping, hence why i took the risk of clipping... i also wanted to see what he actually looked like under the hair and how good his skin was. i dont no that much about him bar from the lady who i got him from got him in a much worse state. she gelded him in august and turned him out which i think made him go down hill again. I understand this will take time, i am not looking for a quick fix just advice. he is on very good hay, not adlib as he just pulls it in his bed and waists it but he gets more than enough. he couldnt be on better hay. he goes out but with weather being bad, not much grass and just paddles about. he is very settled and fairly chilled. I believe him to be 6. he is on fast fiber mix and the dengi is fiber based so i dont think i could possibly increase the amount of fiber

I don't think you need extra mash and fibre beet. Blue chip pro balancer is fab for weight gain. Alfa a oil is brill. If you don't want to use this just add extra oil. Copra cool stance good too.

I had my poor dooer on grass pellets and microns ed linseed but I now have him on fibre beet, fast fibre, cool stance copra and build up cubes. His weight is looking ok, but it's about getting the right balance.

I would highly recommend Allen and Paige Calm and Condition and Pure Feed Condition. Either both together or just one of them. Have a mare who cant gain weight easily and a gelding who gets a bit wired on certain feeds and have found these to be the perfect balance. I also use alpha a oil chaff and found that it gets a nice coat and good condition, used it for all the ponies I've had and never had a problem. Hope you find what you are looking for. X

A 3rd feed, 10 pm, go to bed on a full tummy, plus if he/ she is out in the day come into a small early tea, making 4 small feeds.
