I have two grandchildren, a girl age nearly 8 and a boy of 6. Last year the boy had a loan lead rein pony, and the girl has a little bay mare who belongs to me, who is great on the lead rein, but isn't really suitable off it.Now the loan pony has gone back, so I am having a dilemma about a new pony. Do I try and loan a little pony for the boy for next season (we only do Pony Club and local shows at the moment), and leave the girl on her own pony, as I don't think she is quite ready to come off the lead rein yet, this of course will mean more tears when a loan pony has to go back. Or do I look for a saintly first ridden which might bring her on, and just see how she goes, leaving her on the lead rein if necessary, and put the little boy on the bay pony? She will have to come off the lead rein next year anyway, so I will have to look for another, but it would have to be that special one that everyone wants, as she isn't too confident.Any input very welcome!

I would look for a saintly first ridden and put the boy on your pony , it will then be able to be used for quite a few yrs, otherwise you will have another upset next year when you will def need a FR, good luck, I hope you find a suitable pony, I have Dartmoors which are excellent children's ponies and can carry on if your child is not to tall. my daughter is 21 and still riding them and I have a grandchild who has just been born and she will ride one when she is older

Thank you Janet, I do like Dartmoors myself. I might put the feelers out for a FR , don't want to pay a lot though, as we are still at the pottering around stage.

I would look for a first ridden schoolmaster, ask your pony club dc if they know of any available for loan or coming up for sale.

A true first ridden schoolmaster will usually take you ages to find anyway, so the sooner you start looking the better!

Thanks everyone, I have been stung before with an unsuitable horse, so I am now very nervous about taking the plunge! I would like to think however, that when it came to a childs safety and confidence, that people would be completely honest. I will start looking though, everyone keep eyes open for me!
