When a show gives pre entries how does everyone estimate class start times. Can you guesstimate by saying roughly 5 mins a pony?. I always seem to get it wrong and end up waiting around or getting there just in time!!.

I reckon judges' speed will vary somewhat depending on how well filled the classes are...a good judge and steward with have things going like clockwork for big classes with animals presented so that one is ready to go as soon as the previous one has finished their show.
If a show is quiet with small classes the judge may allow the pace to slow a little.
In my opinion,a small class ridden or in hand of around say 3 or 4 entries...about 5 mins per animal might be about right but with larger classes where judge and steward are on the ball,a bit less time per animal. For WHP classes obviously would be slower.
All guesswork mind you and interesting to read others' opinions.

i usually give half an hour per class but air on the side of caution. Obviously it depends what's on the pre entries but for classes with approx 8 in and around this number I work on the half hour theory.

It is very difficult - at a show near here, a judge took over an hour to judge 4 lead rein ponies and the ring was disastrously behind schedule.
You also can't presume that everyone pre entered will turn up so there might be 8 entered but only 4/5 forward.

That's why I say half hour for 8 cos I bank on 2 not turning up but if they do it compensates for the classes with maybe 4 or 5 in.
