this year I have noticed a huge amount of sycamore saplings growing in one of my paddocks, we don't have a sycamore tree in the field, I imagine they have flown in from nearby, are these little seedlings as poisonous to horses as the seeds are? I imagine it must be a good growing year as I have heard of several other people with this problem.

Yes the saplings are just as poisonous as the seeds, and there have already been reported cases of Atypical Myopothey this spring due to saplings

Pull em up. I normally love trees but sycamore are just like a giant weed, they have a rubbish root system too so tend to fall over, crush fences, houses, etc, so absolute useless as well as the myopathy link . Get rid x

We have seedlings growing in our summer field - I'm currently trying to find out if they are Sycamore or Norway Maple, apparently they are identical at seedling stage but no evidence of the toxin being found in the Maple yet.

I had too many in my field to pull up so I mowed over them which kills them

Does anyone have a photo of what the saplings look like please? If you look on the 'Atypical Myopathy Awareness' page on Facebook there are lots of pictures which should help you to spot them.

After a super quick glance on the fb page am I right in thinking that sweeping and mowing is the best method for removing them???

Mowing seems to be the quickest way as long as the cuttings are collected. Apparently Grazon 90 has been effective but some people believe the toxin is still active after spraying (although this hasn't been tested/proven) & so the seedlings still need to be mowed/collected although others state the toxin is an organic compound so it will biodegrade with the plant ?
