Hi all, my 8 yr old has just come off LR, she is still eligible age wise but all last season we had comments of her being too tall for the class. She still wants to go out and show, but isn't ready for cantering in a class yet. Does anyone know of shows in Lancashire running either novice classes not requiring canter or FYFR classes? We're going to In The Spotlight at Croft this weekend, would love to find more for her to do through the year. Thanks

Thanks Nps Area 5 at Bold Heath EC on the 25th April... there's an unaffiliated ring with a first ridden class... no go round and no canter required! you can enter online until the 22nd April or on the day! £5 for the unaffiliated classes. www.npsarea5.co.uk

stumpedmum - also look for BSPS shows holding Tiny Tots FR classes as cantering is optional in these (& no change of rein as a class or strip)
Too late now but we had these classes at NCPA Spring Spectacular in March, so perhaps an early show for next year!

Stumptedmum. I commend you for trying to find FYFR classes. They are a relatively new concept, to be honest. So, follow this advice, if I may suggest it . . . . .
I'm absolutely not in your area but, I'm a retired Producer of some decent repute, I'm a BSPS Accredited Elite Showing Coach - and I'm a Judge (also, hopefully, of some decent repute!)
My advice is:- to put your daughter into regular FR classes too.
Here's why . . . . .
1) they do not EVER do 'canter' on the 'go round'. That's an absolute no-no. and loses 'pony brownie points' immediately. They TROT only, when together.
They do a half figure of 8 in canter as an integral part of their individual show. That's it.
2) In reality, this is often about 4/6 strides of canter on the pony's "don't like this way" leg lead and a few more strides on the pony's preferred leg.
3) Even put your daughter (on her own) in 'best turned out' etc. just to get her in the ring and on her own. The rest will follow.
Swiftly.
And expensively, if she bites the bullet!!
Enjoy.
First Ridden is such an important class. To me, THE most important class at that age.

Bolton and district riding club have a beginners first ridden class, beginners equitation and even a beginners riding club pony class. We have had a beginners first ridden for about 25 years! See www.boltonanddistrictridingclub.co.uk

You ought to try the Danibeck ones with her Stumpedmum, it's not far across the M62 for you. Fab classes for little ones. Ideal for her making the transition. And great for her confidence.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, Warren Farm is definitely one we will go to, love the venue and I'll look into NPS and BSPS shows close to us. Staffs might be a touch too far right now but will certainly look into it. Caroline, thank you for that. I have sent her into best turned out and novelty classes (where we had the option to do it under saddle) alone before now, and she has done one "best figure of 8 in trot" class at the end of last year. She is really just beginning to canter, but coming on so quickly I think by her next show we will try and have a go at regular FR.
She's just started having lessons (up til now it's mainly been me that has done everything with her) so fingers crossed she'll be cantering round in no time!
Karen - I'm coming seeing you at Danibeck next time its on! Miss Berry always looks after her, so luckily no worries on that score!

Irwell vale riding club have a first ridden class. No canter required on the go round or in the show. Some competitors canter in their show but it is not asked of them. www.irwellvale.org.uk

Lots of riding clubs have children's rings these days, with classses designed to help in that first important year off lead. Check out Abram Hall Riding Club - their under 10 ring is great, and kids in there aren't allowed to do the normal ridden showing classes as well, so she would be among other kids of the same stage. There's also a novelty ring at Brookhead Riding Club, which I think has "Capability" classes, similar to FYFR. RC shows can be cheaper than affiliated, so a cost effective way to gain ring experience early on.
It's several years since my little girl went off lead, and we didn't have the same range of classes available to us then, so we just picked small RC shows and she did the FR class and cantered in her individual show if she felt confident, but stuck to trot if she didn't. The important thing is no pressure from you to win - be proud of her for being brave enough to go and do her show. Cerys used to "get lost" in her show several times - she was only 5 when she demanded to come off lead and found it difficult to remember what to do in her show. But at £5 a class it was a great investment in experience and she had a lot more fun than being stuck on the lead rein.

thanks everyone, she had a great time at In The Spotlight Corp. show, and we're going to do some PC shows through summer and hopefully finish off with the Tots show at Warren Farm before NW Champs, if she's ready (she's insistent that she wants to give it a go!). We couldn't do the BSPS one as I was grooming for a friend and wouldn't have had time. Definitely no pressure from me to win, she is the one pushing to show so I'm just trying to make sure it's in situations that won't set her nerves off again
