Hi everyone
What am I legally allowed to tow, having passed my test after 1997?
Is it 3.5te in total (vehicle, trailer, pony tack etc) without taking the test?
I currently have a seat Ibiza and thinking I could part ex it for a larger family car- Volvo V40 or what litre diesel would I need?
It would only be me, daughter, 11.2hh section A pony and all tack etc going, so not sure I would need a hefty 4x4? Pony weighs 350kg max
What trailers are best,I don't mind the old ones as long as they do the job, but I get the consensus they're generally heavier?
Any help or advice would be appreciated

Any help or advice would be appreciated There is one extra rule on top of all the usual towing rules for those towing on a B licence and that is .... The GVW of the vehicle add to the trailer plated MAM must not total more than 3500 kg That is the total of the plated weights and not the actual weights I need more info to help you What is the top weight on the trailer weight plate ? or what trailer is it ? On the V5 vehicle keepers form what are these weights - Max braked towing weight Max permissible mass alternatively look on the vehicle weight plate usually hidden under the bonnet or in a door frame and post the top two of the four weights shown The only useful info so far is that you have a B licence and the pony weighs 350 kg

Hi ROG Thanks for your reply.
I do not have a trailer or car yet, hence me seeking advise before I go and actually purchase, but was thinking of a Huyundai Sante Fe or Kia Sorento something around 2.2Litres or a Volvo V40
the trailer I was looking at was the Sinclair or Pegasus
Thanks Again Kerry

Thanks again, I think the bateson Derby (unladen 675kg) maybe my best option, I can get this down plated (1165Kg)if needs be the MGW is 1700Kg plus pony say 350 Kg and me, daughter and tack another 300kg (i'm not that fat but over estimating my weight So my vehicle i need to get needs to have a GVW of 2335kg or less, and then actual weight of around 1600kg to be in the 3.5te with pony, trailer daughter and all our gubbins etc! I think I've finally got this Thanks so much for taking your time to reply to me, it really is appreciated

I hope you and your daughter are not going to be in the trailer !!!!!
If the trailer plated MAM is 1165 and the weight of the trailer is 675 with a pony at 350 then the trailer weighs 1025
If the car is 1600 empty and 2335 plated GVW then with the car being loaded with 300 it makes the car 1900
Separate weight limits for car and trailer

Thanks you

Thanks you As long as vehicle GVW and the plated weight of the trailer do not add up to more than 3500 kg then its legal for B towing In your earlier post you seem to take the towing capacity weight as including the people which is not the case as towing capacity refers to the trailer and its load only

Rog us absolutely right with what he says but bear in mind that as your daughter grows, she will likely need a bigger (and therefore heavier) pony.
Whilst with your current pony it is feasible to stay under the weight requirement for the B+E, you need to consider how long it is likely to be until your requirements change and whether it's more cost effective just to do the trailer test now and have a wider choice of tow vehicles and trailers that will fulfil your needs for longer.

Hey II've decided on my car Land Rover Freelander 2. I have my Bateson Derby trailer now which will be downplated to 1165kg
So with both of those options, what's the maximum weight of pony I will be able to take? I think I have a good 5years of ponies around my current ponies weight. It's not feasible to do my test at the moment, but it most definitely is food for thought and a short term solution really
Thanks again
