Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone feeds anything for lazy horses that works? I've been recommended red cell. My horse is hunting fit, gets ridden 5 times a week plus, he can just be lazy. Some days I will get to a show and he will jump a cracking round and there are others where I am more out of breath than him when we finish from keeping him going!

Try some oats - out of fashion I know - fed them for years as I used to work in racing. Will be cheaper than all your modern mixes. A few at first and increase gradually.

My lad is EXACTLY same. Only thing to rev him up is hounds
He is on maize, oats, racehorse mix- no different I'm afraid
I'm trying for variety in his work, schooling in field and focusing on lateral work to sharpen reaction to leg aids
Good luck and let me know about red cell. I wondered about trying that

What's muscle aid Louise?
Turbo didn't touch him!
We laugh - all these people with calmers and here I am trying to rev him up with energy boosters at shows!

Have a nosey at horse health site, the gels are under supplements and then performance, gives all the NGO on there. I would give one a go at home before going to a show. Suprise the turbo didn't help. Could also try iron aid

nope, no change after turbo. We've run his bloods and all good, so he just incredibly laid I think! - apart from when hunting!

The only thing I have found to work is good old fasioned oats on my fell pony. I have tried top spec turbo, endurance mix, you name it I have tried it. Tried oats and they work wonders. I just give him some the night before a show and the morning of the show and he is lots better.

Thanks everyone! He's on red cell and oats at the minute and he did have a bit of a bronk last night haha!
I also have a hound sound clip on my phone from my last trip up to the kennels, that seems to rev him up the most!

Its funny how if this was posted on a dressage forum the replies would suggest training methods to improve the situation, is going back to basics and working on re establishing the link between a light aid and going forward immediately.
On a showing forum its all about what to stick down its throat!

Out of interest is you boy lazy at home or just at competitions. We have a trad mare who was really lazy at shows and we tried all the supplements you could buy to get her to go forward. I noticed at one show she looked worried so as an experiment I gave her magnitude with her top chop lite and top spec lite balancer and we have never looked back. She is a different pony completely. I know it's a bit odd because it's supposed to be a calmer but it also works for anxiety which can make horses lazy/back off

That's not strictly true Sundance, if you read my post and I quote "I'm trying for variety in his work, schooling in field and focusing on lateral work to sharpen reaction to leg aids" He is trained up to Novice and responsive, but I think where perhaps you have a point IS the difference between dressage and showing - and the associated clock work set up to carry a ride judge forward in an outline with no contact and sharp off the leg, and the trained off the leg/into hand with a contact feel desired for dressage.
Aside from all that Perky is some of those thing, but definitely not sharp!!
Might be worth trying, I would say he can be anxious before going (runny poos)..... Maybe. But yes, laid back at home too. Except hunting then very bright

You were the only one though perky, all the rest were about feed/supplements, and the OP asked specifically about them.
For M&M showing there is very seldom a ride judge, but there still seems to be the emphasis on an apparently correct outline and way of going however produced rather than an actually correct one.

I think Sarahp that may well be the case across the board... If my dressage trainer comes to help me at shows her most common observation is "goodness me, look ah his hindquarters... in a separate county to the front!"
I wonder with a new generation of ride judges whether this will change?
....though sorry OP - we've hijacked your post with another topic!

my experience has always been that you can't turn a lazy pony into a forward going one with feed, it has to be schooling and general fittening. if high energy feed has an effect at all it seems to make them difficult and stroppy rather than energetic. Conversely, the forward going ponies i have had have been incredibly sensitive to hard feed and have become turbo charged at the mere whiff of competition mix. which seems ridiculous but there you are. I once travelled to a show with one of each on the lorry. the lazy one was on racing mix at the time, before we realised it really wasn't going to work. The first compartment was packed with all our overnight gear including feeds, with the racing mix apparently securely tucked away in a plastic container well away from the ponies. But when we arrived at the show, we found the empty container rolling around the floor. The problem was, we didn't know which pony had eaten it. My daughter survived to tell the tale so I am assuming it had found its way into Mr Lazy rather than our whizzy welsh c mare who was already one of life's enthusiasts.

Honestly, 'laziness' can be solved quite quickly and easily with consistent training.
Read the Richard Davison article in H%H a few months back. I was sceptical, but it works!
A horse reacts to a fly landing on him, so should therefore react to a similar light touch of the rider. Constant nagging with the legs just desensitises them.
A light aid should be given, and then leg off and a 1 second gap given to allow the horse to choose what to do. If he reacts forward, all is good, if not, leg on hard and maybe back up with stick, to get the reaction that he shoots forward. As he goes forward reward with praise and a pat on the neck. Bring back to the pace you started in and test his reaction to light leg again. Repeat as necessary! But you must do this everytime, there is no going back to old ways.
A horse does want an easy life, and will quickly Learn that life is simple if he just reacts to a light aid first time.
I was sceptical but 2 weeks in and results are amazing! Its hard to remain consistent, as it has to be all the time, hacking, schooling, everytime you ask, he must respond.
My lazy is a reformed character!
