I've got a bit of a problem, when I take my horse's rugs off, especially his fly rugs, it gives him and me static electric shocks. It's getting that bad you can hear the crackling as I start to move the rug. Bless him he's very good about it but yesterday he got a really nasty one which made him well and truly jump. Has anyone got any suggestions please.

put a summer sheet on him first , its the nylon in his rugs that cause the static , from the friction of walking about

Thanks fanfarfan only trouble with that is he will get too warm especially when, at last, the weather warms up. Put him in the Aussie fly rug as thought that had more cotton content however that's one of the ones that's causing the main problem.

This sounds odd but really does work..... try moisturising your hands before doing the rugs

We have a pony we cannot put a stable rug on even though it has a cotton lining, however she will wear a cotton sheet with no problem.

Phillipa - the car door trick is to put your feet on the ground before letting go of the door. So if inside open the door and keep your hand on it until your feet touch the ground. Think it's something to do with earthing.

Just been told that if I clip a piece of electric fence tape to his rug which is long enough to touch the floor, not rubber, then that will earth it. Similar to jw4216 comment above. I love this site, everyone is so helpful.

Phillipa , shut the car door using the window ,,,, i get shocks everyday without fail , even if ive put my feet on the ground first ,,, im fully charged and ready to go , im sure ive got shares in the National Grid lol ,,,,, as for the static in a fly sheet , you can get summer sheets with neck covers , which might be an alternative ,,, ive stopped using fly rugs because of the static , my clipped out minis go out in summer sheets now !!!

Lol. I try to shut it with the window but then the next thing I touch usually has me buzzing. It's usually the yard gate but I've been electrocuting Maisie all day lol

Pleased to say that the moisturiser helped when I took his rug of in the stable this morning. I used the electric fence tape attached to his rug by a peg and touching the concrete when I brought him in today and no electric shocks for either of us, what a result!!!

You used to be able to buy a little conductor that you attached to the back/ bottom of you car, it had a little lightening bolt picture on it. I haven seen a car with one on for years, but they might still be forsale. We had one it worked ok :-)

Just been on the universal price comparison site (eBay) and they are about £5 delivered, called car anti static strip.
