I don't like black hoof varnish, in my opinion it looks so false. Most coloureds have white or striped hoofs, so you are actually changing the hoof colour, which in my opinion is no different to adding a star or covering a white sock on a bay. Lots of people use it though, it is discouraged in CHAPS rules, not sure about BSPA.

Plus, over time, it dries the feet out as the hoof wall cannot absorb moisture and 'breathe' properly. However, if you are hell-bent on using the stuff, a definite no-no is to use it on white feet with white pasterns as it looks ridiculous. And if applying it to (all black) feet, do go round to the heel - an application stopping short of the heel just looks shoddy. What is wrong with good old-fashioned Stockholm tar based hoof oil, applied properly and on the heel & soles of the feet? Or even pig or baby oil rubbed on by hand, which gives a nice natural shine.

A farrier would discourage. Aside from rules and preferences, it is not good for the feet at all. It is a lacquer /varnish and as such stops the feet breathing and absorbing moisture. All in all not good

i used hoof varnish once and never again. it is terrible stuff that you can hardly get off and must be very bad for their feet. i now start by brushng on aqueous cream the night before to give the hoof a really deep clean and then apply a black hoof balm in the morning. works very well and looks natural. hope this helps.

thanks everyone for comments the more I see people using it the more I like it I have been told that the ponys who wear this need to have fab conformation I see lots of top top riders using it and I think it should be down to the owner of what they like the pony to have its hooves dressed with also it the pony has two hind hooves that are naturally black and the fore are white it looks so much neater to have them all black maybe they could make the black dressing in matt which would look so much better instead of gloss being so shiny that's the only bit I don't really like

I would highly recommend.

I read in an interview with the chairperson of CHAPS that it's one of her pet hates.
Our coloured has 4 whites and light coloured feet and he would look ridiculous with shiny black hooves on the end of his lovely white legs.
But as you say it's down to personal preference at the end of the day.
