Its come to my attention, as I have a pony who competes on the over 143 section in the m&m whp classes, that these classes seem to have considerably less quals then other classes. The m&m workers now have just 16 qualifiers, fewer then ever this year as qualifiers have been taken from shows such as nps area xi, which used to host the first qual of the year. I personally do not understand why these classes, which I have known to have over 40 entered in a section have such few qualifiers, the m&m falt classes have nearly double, but I do understand they are popular classes, but the plaited classes, which are still popular, but not nearly as popular as the m&m's, have over 20...
Does anyone know why, as these classes are so popular? And why some shows had these quals taken... Sorry for the moan, I just dont feel like it is fair to have such few qualifiers when the classes are so popular.

To my knowledge there have always been 16 finalists in each class at HOYS which in fact means more ponies now qualify as there are 4 divisions.

I was told that when they changed it to 4 sections (which takes longer to run at hoys) they reduced the actual number of qualifiers. Don't know if that's the reason but I agree there are so many M&Ms it does seem a shame. It's seems to be quite normal nowadays to have around 35-40 in my 2 sections (143 and ex 143) Atm only looking at doing 3 qualifiers that are within a reasonable distance (Derby, Cheshire and Lincoln) might be easier to win the lottery!!

There are the same number of qualifiers this year as there were last year. With the other M&M classes running on the Thursday at HOYS there is no arena time to fit in any more ponies on that day. Allocation of qualifiers and the number are reviewed every year but the time constraints and timetable at HOYS are always limiting factors.

There are only so many hours in a day! M&Ms are just so popular now

Count yourself lucky that you only have 40 ponies in your qualifiers! Up in Scotland there is only 1 M&M WHP qualifier and it has been known to draw in upwards of 50 in the larger height classes.
There is also one 1 set of Flat Welsh qualifiers in Scotland which is beyond a joke seeing as they, bar the Highlands, are usually the biggest classes at shows up here! But that's another gripe for another day!
