I wonder if anyone can help. My welsh section c has rubbed off fur from his face.
The background is that over the last week I have noticed he has lumps that look like bites on his chest, shoulders and neck but nowhere else. I have sprayed him with fly spray since I noticed the first 'bite'.
A couple of days ago I noticed a small patch of fur missing from his face - I assumed he had rubbed it but the skin underneath looked fine.
This evening I noticed two strips of fur missing either side of his star so I checked under his forelock and found a patch where the fur had been rubbed off and he had made himself bleed. The area looked clean and the blood had started to scab over. The visible skin looked fine.
Over the winter I had supplemented his feed with feedmark's equidermisplus but stopped that appriximately 4 weeks ago. I had started feeding garlic, dodson & horrell meadow herbs - both have been fed previously without any issue but have started to use dodson & horrell itch free (I think that is what it is called).
The only change to his feed is I am no longer feeding him allen & page fast fibre which I only feed during winter months.
I haven't checked for lice but will do tomorrow morning.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Rubs under the forelock and on the face are likely to be caused because lice are irritating the pony. Try deosect, it worked when this happened to one of my ponies.

Thanks.
I gave pony's mane and forelock a very thorough check for lice and could find no eggs or live lice so not sure where to ho from here.
I read on another forum that it is ok to give over the counter hay fever/antihistamine medicine to horses - has anyone had any success with using them to ease bites.
