please can someone clear up a debate we've been having!
I have a vague recollection that it is illegal to travel horses at night without lights?? - my trainer says not?!
Is this just in trailers? - or horseboxes as well?
Thanks in anticipation

Do you mean lights in the horse section? Plenty leaving Royal London last night with no lights in the back, I would imagine that many horse boxes don't actually have any lights in the horse section. Not sure about legality though.

I don't think you need them, but they are useful!

We've just had a new horsebox built and inside the horse area it has normal lights which run off the leisure battery and the red 'travelling' lights which come on when the horsebox sidelights/headlights are on.

I had a mare that wouldn't travel in the trailer at night with the lights on. So whether it's illegal or not I couldn't keep them on !!

Our new box also has this same set up, my husband made me laugh when he said that it made the box look like a Red Light District on wheels

I understand that you shouldn't travel showing a white light behind, personally I don't like following any vehicle whose lighting isn't correct and is shining a white light to the back,I find it rather distracting

I am interested in the legal status on this. But I always find it odd when people drive off witht the lights on in the back of the lorry. Presumably it would be dark in their stable too? However, v useful for people and an added safety factor should you need to do things quickly and easily in the back with the horses

I've been told to leave the light on to help to stop the horses getting all the blind flashing lights from the traffic into their eyes !! (hope this make sense ! )

I have sent an email to a new neighbour who is quite high up in the local police force to see if he can answer the question for all of us

I would say its illegal to leave them on. Just as interior lights in a car being on can be distracting, if you had rear windows in a side loading lorry this would shine out at cars behind - white lights instead of red so confusing. Ponies travel quietly with a haynet & no lights in my experience.

My policeman neighbour is still waiting for the road traffic lot to get back to him so he hasn't forgotten,as soon as he lets me know the police take on this I will let you know.

Thanks in anticipation This is the reply from my policeman neighbour No vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which is capable of showing any light to the rear of the vehicle other than a red light. This website gives good explanation and more info: www.transportsfriend.org/road/lights/position.html

So any 6.5 T lorry or above would be OK to have them left on because most have solid rears but the little 3.5T quite often have a window in the back door, so that would be a no. Personally I think they travel OK in the dark. They can see very well in poor light anyway.

Oh sorry, yes forgot the trailers. I suppose unless you can close up the back top doors then yes it would be illegal I guess.

When I got my Lorry built they put a red light in the horse area for legal reasons seemingly.
