My 15hh cob needs a new saddle as her current one (A Thorowgood T8) is now too tight over her large shoulders and is restricting her movement. I've previous had good experiences with a Thorn pad on a Highland pony that I used to ride and am considering getting one for my new girl. I know a lot of people don't seem to like them on larger breeds and she is wide with a small wither but not the sort which would be impossible to fit. I found the Thorn pad I had used previously to be very comfy and suited the Highland well so does anyone think it may be worth trying it on my cob to see how she goes?

I'm not sure it would be appreciated by all ride judges? Although I like them, my daughter has one, I think a traditional saddle is more expected on a show cob?

Most ride judges will refuse to ride in one. i think it is also against several society rules.

I saw quite a few on the show circuit this year, including on larger natives. When I was looking at them I was surprised to see how many larger ponies were wearing them and HOYS qualified ponies too, they do seem popular. I can't see issues unless societies are against tireless saddles being used.

I can kind of accept them on small breeds with children riding, but can't accept they are not going to cause damage in the long term if an adult is using one and bouncing up and down on a pony's back all the time without a tree to help absorb the weight. Hopefully I will be proven wrong, but IMO there is nothing better than a well-fitted treed saddle on a pony being ridden by an adult. I definitely wouldn't contemplate using one on a horse or pony that is likely to have a ride judge.

There was both Welsh C and Ds wearing them in HOYS qualifiers. There's also an Exmoor that does workers at HOYS wearing one.

I have one for my welsh cobs. I love it and have shown in it but i do only now use it for hacking when taking both horses out as i only have one treed saddle.
Although i find it very comfy i wouldnt present one to a ride judge!
