I have a bit of a predicament!
Myself and my partner both have a car each - 64 plate Vw Polo and I have an 04 navara for towing/ going up and down farm road.
I also have a work van that isn't currently on personal use, but can be put on if needed.
My partner is off to the army in November and will be based 5 hours away from home so will get train to and from work.
My predicament is, he thinks we should trade in the polo and the navara and get an economical 4x4 I can tow with that will do the long journeys if it needs to and then have my work van for work
Or, I put the navara off road and use my work van for personal, and polo will sit doing nothing until he comes home and drives it at the weekends (when he comes home).
If we trade it in, what do we get... looking at 09/10 or newer, in the £11grand region, so good budget but I love my navara and wouldn't want to trade it in for something that isn't substantial enough to tow and isn't economical enough to warrant getting rid of it!!

We have the same dilemma, need towing vehicle that pulls 3.5t but don't want a truck, Discovery was lovely but just too much to go wrong, dashboard used to light up like a Christmas tree and faults so expensive to put right. Looking at a shogun, anyone got horror stories about them?

Discos that we were looking at 11+ were 500 a year to tax!! Ruled them straight out - my other half likes the freelander but will only tow 2200 at most - anyone had experience with freelanders as towing vehicles??

I'd trade in then
Take a look at the Towing sticky thread/s in the competition section of the Horse and Hound forum, lots of people have been given good advice and also posted about car and trailer combinations that have worked really well

I'm selling an exceptionally good 09 plate Shogun on here for not a lot of money. Only for sale as we have no job for it. It tows 3.5 tons and is a really lovely car. It's very very clean. Never had any hay etc in it. It's in the horsebox section. Take a look and if it's any good give me a shout. Needs to go so an offer on asking price is welcomed.

VW Touareg will do the job, I've got one and love it. Also smart enough for everyday use too.

I've got a Mitsubishi L200 pickup, the long bed version and it's brilliant for towing but also lovely to drive and very comfortable. Highly recommended

I used to have a Showgun - absolutely fantastic car, I really loved it but unless you get a new one they only tow 3.2 ton - If this is sufficient, then I highly recommend the mitsubishi!

Freelanders are rubbish towing vehicles so I would avoid them - pretend 4x4s! If you really like your current 4x4 then why not trade the Polo in and put the cash away for when you need it and then see how you get on with your Navara and work van. It's so easy to buy a pig in a poke (is that a Scottish only phrase - you may need it interpreted lol!) that I would stick with what you have if it is decent rather than take a risk on the unknown

I have a Volvo XC90 and it's great for towing a 511 and 2 horses. It's not got the best turning circle, but you learn to live with that as everything else about it is great.

Just looked it up Maddiesmum, seems people love it or hate it and it's expensive to run according to reviews. Would your mum buy another one (always find this the best indicator) as someone who actually uses it in real life. Has a towing capacity of 3000kg so would do the job.

Mum has had it 4 years and is looking at getting another. Dad got it for her after she previously had a couple of Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Ssangyong is not as plush inside etc as the Jeep, but more economical & a lot cheaper to buy. It towed my two show jumpers in an Ifor no worries, and certainly has no issues with my daughters LR! We have never had to be towed out at shows when ones around us have. Has also been used to drag old fencing out of hedges etc, been a good workhorse & very reliable. Mums is a 2.9 Diesel version if that helps.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. We have decided (for now) as we have so much going on with my partner away most of the time, we are going to wait and trade in in the new year. I have heard good and bad reviews of the Renton but most love it, looked at a volvo and like them too. Just can't bare to part with my Navara quite yet!!

Have a look at the Kia Sorento XT model.... pulls 3 ton and is pretty economical to run too! These have 7 year guarantees on them, so if you can pick one up even at 3/4 years old, there's still guarantee there on the vehicle.
I had a shogun for years and loved it,...but when it came time to change I opted for a change as it was getting thirsty. It took me a bit to bond with the sorento,...but I'm loving it now and it's a dream to tow with. I managed to find one with really low mileage on the clock and in mint condition too, so I was chuffed!

I've just bought a mk1 kia sorento for towing. Older one (2004) as this had a better towing capacity than some of the newer models (mine can tow 2800kg which should be ample for me as I only need a pony trailer) We haven't towed with it ourselves yet, but it drives brilliantly, and the power steering is so so light - easier than my c-max! It's also similar cost-wise to run as the c-max, unlike a lot of 4x4's (proper 4x4's that can actually tow, not pretend ones like the freelander of cr-v. I have to say I also think it's a pretty good looking beast I need it as a family car too, so didn't want an out and out roughty 4x4 like a land rover. ETA I will have another I think. We were on a tight budget with this one so I just have the lowest spec - if we get on well with it, in a year or three we will look at upgrading to a slightly newer one with a better interior spec.

Be careful with the Kia Sorentos, we had one and totally agree it was great however since, I think it's 2009, the later models no longer tow 3 ton. We found this out last year when we wanted to get a later model, ours was a 2007, unfortunately they have changed the spec to be more "environmentally friendly" and hence lighter, that's why we ended up with a VW Touareg which I must say is even better than the Kia although it does have a bigger price tag. Think it's the worst thing Kia could have done as they were voted best towing car for many a year when they could tow 3 ton.

Our Sorento was horrendous. It was bought new. 2012. Never again. It had the power to tow but no stability and would wag with just a section A in a brand new ifor.
We have VW transporters which don't budge. Totally stable as was the shogun (which has now been sold today)

OK - firstly - DONT BUY A LANDROVER!! It will cost you a fortune as they are the most unreliable cars in the world actually if aliens drive then the Universe!!
Secondly, I am not sure about your partner's comment 'economical 4x4' - not sure there is such a thing but if you were thinking 'can pull trailer and is less likely to break down' then I would go for a Shogun or something from Asia! Not sure what a Navara is like but if you like it then I'd keep it.
Thirdly, have you thought about getting a lorry and keeping the very economical vw which you can use and he can use and when you both want to go out you can use the van?

Economical 4x4 would be something that does better mpg than my navara which is a nissan pick up. Can't have a lorry where we are, just wouldn't fit down the drive so traiker for 3.5 is our only option and for the safety aspect of a 3.5 and my 17.2 in it, I'd be looking at about 20 grand, which is over my budget. Then I'm still taxing and moting two vehicles.
