Anyone experienced a pony that almost seems do be hiccuping ? He seems to do it if stressed so ie too hot or too cold or too excited. I worry it may lead to colic he’s done it about 10 times in 4 years.
Any experiences please share as I have never seen this before !

I've heard it's called 'thumps' and is most often due to fluid loss/dehydration, electrolyte imbalance or possible low calcium .. ask your vet to check your pony

Yes I had a small show hunter that did this for nearly an hour, I phoned my vet who asked if he was in distress, when I said no I was advised to do nothing, leave him resting in his stable but if it continued for more than 24 hours or he got distressed he would come out and sedate him. I was told that hiccups in horses is very rare but it does happen.

I was told that hiccups in horses is very rare but it does happen. He only does it for about 10-15 minutes and then it passes. He had his stallion licence done and had a full vet check heart etc and after work. Mine doesn’t get distressed with it either. Glad to hear someone else who’s experienced this.
