I think its very difficult to take results into account as the graders do not know what else was competing against you in the class on the day or how well your boy showed himself off. They do however have a very comprehensive form to fill out which will hopefully shed some light on what they didn't like about him. Good luck for October.

Its either fail, first stage approval or pass.

its very difficult to just be judged on how you do on one day. my lad was a hell of a lot flatter than he normally is and didnt have any sparkle that he usually has. a combination of a 5 hr journey the night before and a strange stable took its toll on him.
might be worth ringinf chaps and asking them to e mail your marks sheet. they e mailed mine with results. then at least you will know.

Cayo, as I have said on another forum, please be very careful what you type in the heat of the moment, it may come back to haunt you. You have 3 options open to you at the moment. 1 - geld him and show him in HOYS classes as a gelding. 2 - don't show him in affiliated classes and keep him entire 3 - wait to represent him again in October and use the time between to try and improve the area's where he has been given lower marks.
I have never been given marks of 8 or 9 for Buffy in the whole time we have shown her and therefore cannot compare, at no time in a showing class has she been judged as a potential broodmare, only as a lightweight hunter which is her type (regardless of her colour). The graders looked at her as a broodmare and marked her accordingly looking at what she had to offer - the same can be said of your boy. They clearly felt that as a stallion he perhaps didn't meet the mark to pass on the traits that his type should have. I have no idea what makes a good or bad hairy so cannot offer any critique whatsoever but I do know that CHAPS are a very well respected society who's grading system is a well established one, employing experienced and knowledgeable panels to ensure the long term future of the coloured horse and pony

well i certainley wont be putting him through being gelded at nearly four its hard on them . he is the best stallion for temprement we have had and he dosent deserve that ,when i calm down i may decide to take him back in oct or send him with someone else .until then we will enjoy him at unaffiliated leval '

What percent do you need to pass the grading???
Cayo gelding is not always a bad thing my friend has just had her welsh c gelded at 8 as he had only ever done inhand showing and did not take to the ridden. I rode him last week at a show after 2 months of being gelded and he won an nps class!!! He has a much better life now and was fine after the operation. I am not suggesting you geld but it is not always that truamatic.

I have to agree with Titch. I had my 6yr fell stallion cut under local and he was fine not fussed in the slightest and with no complications-he was back out showing as a gelding 3 weeks later. In fact he won his class with a 9yr jockey on board, so was not too traumatised by his experience ;-)

i know i have had them gelded late before too with good and bad results i am afraid one or two have had nasty infections just unlucky i guess but really dont want to geld him ,just to be able to do certain shows ,imo he would still be the same horse and isnt going to improve his comformation ect just cos hes been cut is he .there for he wouldnt be any better as a gelding than a stallion would he as he is the same horse no he is keeping his bits and if he dosent improve enough to grade with chaps then so be it , a shame but not the end of the world .
