I don't think you can go by height or build or anything. I think you have to get on, see how you feel and ask someone to video and then be honest with yourself.
If you find yourself tempted to ask if you look big, then I think you probably do. You must immediately feel fine and have no need to ask. You should not be lifting your heel to kick and the pony should be happy and move freely. Often people put up photos on the internet and ask 'am I too tall, too fat, etc'. They rarely get honest answers because people prefer not to be unkind.
Some adults look fine, but most don't and I have no idea why they don't just find a larger model, afterall we are spoilt with the larger breeds as well.

i'm 5 foot and 25 and i have a 12.2hh new forest i love ponies and would rather ride a pony than a horse. As said above you won't know until you have ridden one some people are fine others are not.

if it looks fine and you are happy go for it. dont really know why people ask ,as when they hear something they dont want to hear with difference of opinions all hell breaks loose. who really cares what others think your do what you want to do regardless, this question just keeps on being asked time and time again.

This is my friend (paddywak on here) on my mother's Sec A who is 12hh ... and she is adult and about 5' I think: So adults can look just fine riding small ponies, if the right size. I think at 5'3" you might need something a little bigger than an A, but it depends on your build and the pony etc. As others have said, go and try some and see how you feel. If I was smaller than I would def love to ride smaller pony! I am 5'8" with long legs, so a D is really smallest I can ride sensibly. Lexy

paddywak looks lovely. I hope you don't mind me saying, but paddywak has fairly short legs and she is generally petite, she is also a very balanced rider totally carrying herself. The pony is a hunk of a chunk and looks to take up the leg.

dimwit - Ah thanks, my mother bred her She is called Floreat Creme de Cassis. sageandonion - Yes she is a hunk of a chunk ..... lol. She is 10yr old mature pony, and is definitely an A with plenty of width & depth. And no, that is not her now it was taken at height of summer last year! I definitely agree that it really depends on both type/size of both pony and rider (and not just height) and also the way the rider rides. Paddywak is a very good and experienced rider and does ride really quietly and balanced. Here is same rider on a less hunky Sec A (Floreat Quintessa), and this photo was taken today hence the winter fluff still moulting out! Lexy

I think if you look right on the pony.. Not to tall & not to big, then yes its fine.. But you get some people riding small M&Ms such as shetlands who have extremely long legs or a long body. I personally thinks it looks silly :/

lexy - I think those pictures prove the point completely. The first picture - rider looks perfect and really fits the pony. The second picture - she looks a fraction tall on pony and as you say they are different types of pony. Think you have to get on and see how you feel! (and look!) I'm not saying paddywack looks too big on the second pony - just the overall picture isnt quite so nice!

Highhill- Dont worry about offending me i agree i am a little long on the second pony she is a lot slighter than Cassi. Although she is a powerful little thing. Having ridden quite a lot of ickle ponies i think its really obvious to the rider when the pony isnt happy. In this case she is more than happy, forward going and entusiatic about her work, happy to work over her back etc so im quite happy riding her. I am very concious of my size on ponies and would definatly pick up if she wasnt happy straight away With Tessa im hoping once she has filled out, put on topline and generally bulked up (being only 5 this time and having wintered out until Feb she has a fair bit to do) she will take up my leg a little more. Heres another pic of me on her taken on same day i Back to the original question at 5ft3 and normal build - i always thought i was 5ft3 but on recently measuring imonly a little over 5ft1 and for my height i have really stumpy legs! i think you would prob be fine on a bulky A like Cassi or some darty/exmoor ponies are equally bulky and seem bigger to me. You might look a bit long on a slight one like the bay above.? I recommend you go and sit on a few and see how you feel im sure you will know straight away if you feel too tall out of balance etc I have a couple of friends who are similar height to me and some could easily ride the ponies and others would look rediculous i think it depends on you and the ponies conformation- if you have long legs might not work? Hope this is helpful end of my waffle! have fun pony shopping

Heres a vid of me on the two above- Tessi has slimmed a lot in last few weeks so think i look bigger on her now than when i started her need to get the weight back on her now but sure that wont be a prob with the spring grass coming Tessi www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX58qOTtX9MShes 5 this time and only backed beg of Feb Cassi www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWCowOqpJkA&feature=relatedBear in mind Cassi is a mature pony - in show condition- in the summer! x

Cassi is in "show condition" 365 days a year !! Lol. We were told by a judge she was too fat at a show in March last year, when she had been out all winter, with no hay or hard feed. She is a very good do-er highhill - yes I know what you mean, but as paddywak has said this is a young pony and not yet really in show condition. So think with a couple of months and more muscle, condition & maturing and they will look fab together. But yes, this does show how the same rider can look different on 2 ponies of same height. paddywak - 5'3" ...... ha ha ha Anyway point remains, that adults definitely can look fine on small breeds (dependant on pony & rider size of course!) I think if your feet are below your ponies tummy or very nearly below then you are too tall, it is difficult to use your legs properly if your feet are below the tummy and if you want to jump then there is a risk you might knock the jumps with your feet!
I think Paddywak is just about ok for the 1st pony but might look better on a slightly bigger one and is a bit too long in the leg for the 2nd pony for the picture to be perfect.
I am 5.2ft just about and have a 13.2 chunky pony and he takes up leg a lot as he is wide in the barrel. Personally I would not want to ride much under 13h though and I have seen some adults riding very short on the small breeds to squeeze their legs on and I don't think that looks that great either.

I know this thread is years old but I'm considering buying a pony for my two boys that I could also share, been doing lots of research and stumbled upon this. I'm going to be really cheeky and ask what weight paddywack is?! Sorry to be so nosey but I'm trying to figure out what weight I need to get down to in order to be able to ride a pony. I'm looking at a native type, maybe NF? Approx 13.2. At 5'1" I'm guessing about 9 stone would be acceptable? Thanks

I think at 5'1 & 9 stone a 13.2hh Native will barely notice you - you will be fine!

Thanks Dancer :-) What amazing motivation for sticking to a diet! I haven't rode for 13 years since having quite a bad accident, I can't wait to get back in the saddle x

Depending on your current weight you may not need to diet!

Lol, at 14 stone I expect a fine horse let alone a pony would buckle underneath me! We're on holiday for three weeks at the end of August so I'll get as much weight off as possible (and increase fitness level!) and start looking when we get back. Obviously the boys could ride straight away so pony wouldn't be wasted.

I've not been 9 stone for a few years sadly, but my Fells (smallest is just under 13hh) all easily carry me. I probably wouldn't let anyone over 12 stone ride them for any length of time, but that's not to say they couldn't cope with that either. Totally off topic now, but I still miss sageandonion
