What a saga!!
This poor lady (who just happens to be the mother of my treasured God-daughter) has been through enough lately with the ill-health of her son-in-law.
I fully comprehend serious ll-health as I live with it 24/7.
For once, I am going to be very rude - and I am going to say to ther antagonists "get a grip".
There is life (or hanging in there) outside of showing.
So much so that I have only just seen this thread.
Poor Di. Do NOT take notice of these people.............

Good Lord! Think I shall give this showing business a miss. If I spoke to or about a fellow competitor or a British Dressage judge like this, then my membership would be terminated and I would be seriously reprimanded.
Did someone say this disgraceful behaviour was reported in horse & hound?
Well you won't like this, but with such examples of low life behaviour, showing will never be seen as on an equal footing to other equestrian disciplines.
Showing Societies need to get together to put in place strict procedures and start to hold their Judges in higher regard. Should you be referring to Judges as 'straight' or otherwise. There is a problem if you feel a need to do this.

Christ doesn't it annoy you! With my truck being so tempremental at the moment I am just glad to blinking get there let alone anything else. I do sometimes feel a little cheated, especially when I see the winner going home with the Steward (happened the other week at a R.C. show), but that just makes it soo much better when little ol' me does well.
Last year I got the Reserve M & M at Royal Lancs with my 2yr old filly and a lady, similar age to me, who I never met got the Champion with her Fell Stallion, I was soo proud to get Reserve Champ and the pair of us stood with tears in out eyes, we are now very good friends and chat all the time... I love her because she came 4th at the FP Stallion Show and her smile made me proud of her and her boy.
I suppose we are just 'mere' pony owners, but just competing is enjoyable in itself... I get to spend time with friends, my pony and my hubby, and when that stops being enjoyable I suppose I will stop competing.
I will always congratulate the winner and be sure to watch and learn!

What saddens me, is when a competitor does not do very well, and then outside the ring with their horse goes ballistic at a hogher placed competitor for brushing them whilst on the horse. I witnessed this at a local show, when a younger rider accidently brushed past a much older competitor, the older competitor then went of in a full blown rage at this poor gril, who was utterly shocked. My mum has also told me, that when in a class, the ringside lovlies were effing me off, and how their daughter should have won, only to realise my mum was stood next to them, and was in full blown earshot, haha! the looks on their faces when mum took my saddle and walked back to the trailer

I do sometimes feel a little cheated, especially when I see the winner going home with the Steward (happened the other week at a R.C. show), I don't think I would be concerned about seeing a winner going home with a steward - particularly at a riding club show. Stewards can sometimes be even more difficult to source than judges, so I think we need to be careful not to put off such vital volunteers

It is very sad when things come to this stage - competitors and judges should show respect for each other. Judges have given up time to judge for free and competitors have paid money to be judged. It is easy to be a back seat driver and critise what you are watching completely different to being in the driving seat so to speak.
I always thank the judge where ever I am placed and it is really nice when the judges also thank the all the competitors for coming regardless of their placing.

On a more positive note - I have seen many examples of good sportsmanship in and around the ring! Lets not dwell on the minority here. There are plenty of sporting, mannerly competitors...and that is why the likes of Mrs Hesford should not have their confidence or willingness to judge dented by the rude few!

Only just caught up with this thread, how sad that a respected judge has felt the need to come on and defend herself like this. My 10 year old daughter is really enjoying taking in the young judges scheme with the NPS. Is this really what she has to look forward too.

oh my word! well having been asked for several years to be on the panel and finally deciding maybe i have some time to do so, i have now been so completely put off......the showing world desperately needs new judges but who would want to judge knowing this is what happens.such a shame.
