how old is the little rider? when my kids were really tiny, we used a leather donkey saddle with a bar to hold at the pommel and it was fab .. they didnt need any stirrups .. if you cannot get your basket saddle then this would be ideal

i bought one 19 years ago when kate was tiny, used it twice, thought they were terrifying, as child is strapped in by harness round waist and between legs, even if the pony is anicent and a saint, i wasn't prepared to take the risk of not being able to get her off immediately in case of an emergency. carted it round the world and never used it again!!

oh my god, I though this such a good idea at the time, the child in question is 10 mths, as the 2.5 yr old is finding it hard enough to stay in a saddle, I though if I had a basket saddle at least that way I could walk them around without needing 2 other people all the time, as the Shetland is barrel shaped and there legs don't quite get around him and support themselves in the stirrups!!! I am also UNDECIDED NOW!?!?! ANY SUGGESTIONS ANYONE???

I used one for all 3 of my children and never had a problem and they all went on to ride at top level!!! The difference is that they give a younger child back support which a normal saddle cant do. I found it the best thing in the world for getting them to sleep.!!! and it also gave me the chance to get out and get some fresh air and excercise!!!! I can only speak from experience but we used ours on everything from a shetland to a highland. My only word of caution would be to make sure that the pony is steady and trustworthy!!!but that goes without saying really!
