Miss Coates is an extremely nice, helpful judge, very good with children (if polite and smile) likes a correct pony that can gallop in our few experiences under her. I dont think I have ever read or heard anything negative about her.

Ms D Spears (bucks) and i went to watch my grand daughter and she was not a good judge - v inconsistant - if they lived in 24/7 with a summer coat mid winter - you won or near as - terrible - natives are meant to be hardy - not wrapped up in cotton wool - but what do i know!

sorry I don't agree. Have seen Debbie Spears judge many times - always fair, judges what she sees on the day and doesn't care who is on top. She actually told a friend of mine that their pony was too trimmed and not what she'd expect for a native and they were moved down because of it.

If you think Debbie Spears is not straight and fair, you should give up showing cause there is no hope for you.
She likes what she likes and is not afraid to put anyone down.

I agree with you Gertrude. Not sure who the winner was but it was a very nice connie that went well. There were ponies in the line up that had been to HOYs and Olympia but they didn't automatically win as some judges would of done. Debbie also likes them to be mannerly and those that didn't go well were down the end of the line - isn't that how it should be? Whenever I'm in a class I look at myself first and think did the pony actually go well enough to beat those at the top. Sometimes of course the answer is yes but if you are honest with yourself you can often look at those above you and think actually they were better and perhaps I need to go home and polish up my act

Highland Lover - I believe that you might be confusing - "wrapped up in cotton wool" - with "clipped, fit and working".
I had 2 ponies in the ring on Sunday, both are in full time work competing at dressage, show jumping, showing and both regularly hunt.
PUK, NPS and BSPS rule books - it states quite clearly that ridden ponies can be clipped within their breed standard guidelines for welfare reasons, in line with the work that they are being expected to do.

i have been under debbie quite a few times and if i wrong leg it (and there has not been a last time im sure) im never placed which im sure is fair. whereas if my horse goes average compared to other horses im in the top 5. So surely that is what you call fair judging.

Have been under Debbie Spears a couple of times and if our boy is well mannered he does really well. She knows her breed type and likes to see a good show - regardless whos on top - very refreshing and definitely a good "black and white" judge.

I think it has to be said that some horses naturally have better coats than others. All ours are kept in exactly the same conditions and two have amazing coats and two are vile!!
Doesn't mean they are kept in 24/7 as ours certainly aren't!

Totally agree misterben, I have two ponies that live as a pair - both are fed the same, live in the same field are the same breed, and even have the same sire.
Both have identical turnout rugs on - one looks like it is ready to do the Royal Welsh, the other looks like it is ready for a weekend in Tibet!!!!!!!

Does anyone know what Mr. Cook (Northants) is like in regard to M+Ms?

Mr P Cook - seems to like pony types, with movement. In my experience can be a little facey, but not extreme...
Also likes them to be well mannered.....

Mr Cook awful judge only likes SHP that gallop looking as if they are out of control, uses his own scoring system and gives a mark out of 20 for gallop, so if yours dosen't go like **** of a shovel then youve no hope!!!! GOOD LUCK
