My pony was clipped end of December and no sign of any growth at all I'm afraid so I would also appreciate any tips to encourage even just a few hairs to sprout !

It's not going to grow if you are keeping him warm with the two rugs.
Obviously I don't know exactly how the weather has been with you, but up here on the Scottish Borders there has been such varience in the weather - in that situation it's necessary to diligently change rugs accordingly (just as we would add or remove clothing ourselves)
And, extend his daylight hours by using artificial lights, maybe on a timer if you are unable to be there as often as you'd wish.
Presumably you feed oils and Linseed?

Fewer rugs? I have one the same, next year I'll clip him earlier. Nothing sprouting out of mine at all!

Feed oil but not Linseed does that help?
The weather has been constantly changing, i will take off a rug and see if his coat grows, its grown on his face and actually looks really nice, as for the rest of his body..... plucked chicken springs to mind!
I just didnt want him to grow long "cat hairs" if i take a rug off

I just didnt want him to grow long "cat hairs" if i take a rug off 'Cat hairs' are easy to dispose of. To get an all-over spring coat, he really does need to go 'nude' when the weather allows - when you rug up again for the night, ensure that you've maintained an even temperature. Linseed/Flax (even Oil of, if you can't bear the thought of faffing around boiling it) is a trusted feedstuff as old as the hills - and is renowned for improving digestion. If a pony is stale inside it will be stale outside. Presumably he gets a really thorough, stimulating grooming on a daily basis - that helps to improve circulation no end. Maybe, (a lesson learned the hard way!) clip him before Christmas next year, not after....!

I noticed my clipped pony stared to get his summer coat through better when I took a layer off. I also clipped before xmas and I am glad I did as summer coat started to come through in Feb and my unclipped ponies are shedding coats for fun and they only have 1 rug on. It has been so much warmer in Feb here in Lancs as I have never had coats coming through this early

Agree with everything shsstablemanager says.
I made the mistake of clipping after xmas once, never again. Absolute nightmare. Clipped nothing this time and their summer coats arent far off, mind you due to lambing the lights in the stables have been on, they started moulting weeks ago. They have wintered with a medium/heavy full neck t/o and a medium stable rug and are now out in the day in lightweights, lovely day yesterday and my young horse was sweating by 10.30 am so stripped them naked.

My Uncle was a true old-fashioned horseman and he used to swear that you should never clip after Boxing Day. Wish I'd remembered that when I clipped in janaury as he was always right!

Yeah I agree with that , I thought it was up to the first week in jan ,as after then it interferes with the summer coat coming through ? ppl seam to clip whenever they think a pony needs it now , I personally wouldn't do that but maybe things have changed

I clipped our Welsh A mare in May last year! She was just coming back into work after 2 years more or less off with laminitis, and she was sweating like a pig when ridden - no sign of shedding her full winter woollies and temperatures were soaring. We had no plans to show her, so clipping was a simple welfare issue.
She then grew her best ever summer coat within a couple of weeks.
None of our ponies has shed a single hair yet. No amount of brushing or furminating gets the hair off. They're all living out naked, apart from our itchy lad, who is now sporting his SI hood and fly rug.
When they're ready, the summer coats will grow, but every pony works to its own timetable - and Shetland timeatbles seem to be about 2 months behind everything else ;D

i clipped one about 4 weeks ago (EEEK) and he has now almost a full summer coat. I use lots of rugs, lights and let them get warm whilst working too. Its turned mild too, so that helps.
