I drive me section a - bought him 4 years ago to keep my cob company, broke him to drive and never looked back (sold cob!) I don't do much in the summer, just the odd agricultural show, but do indoors in the winter - I love it and would definitely recommend to anyone. My pony much prefers driving to riding, he whizzes around those obstacles! The other benefit is my children can come out with me,I sit up front and they sit on the back.

I have recently had my outgrown dartmoor pony broken to harness by Mike Daniells (Woodbridge, Suffolk). I sent him away and it only took two and a half weeks as he was so good. I am now driving him around the lanes and he has taken to it so well. I managed to get an exercise cart locally and bought some washable zilco harness. The only annoying thing is that the cart does not have a bench cushion. I need a vinyl one and have had a quote from a local place for £95 which seems very expensive! If anyone has any ideas where I could get one made for less I would be very grateful. I hope to be able to go on some BDS drives once we have gained some more experience. It is great learning to drive with a pony that you already know very well.

I used to drive my section A (now sold, and still driving when his new Mum manages to prise him away from her keen daughter!!!!) I had never driven before, but after breaking him to ride struggled for a jockey, so a friend suggested driving, she helped me break him and it was the easiest process ever, I loved driving, such good fun!!!!! (And he loved it too!!!!)

As Jeni17 said my lovely boy drives, he's a 14.1hh riding pony and can turn his hoof to most things.
I have lovely little 4 wheeler, just wish i had someone who could backstep for me more often so we could get out a bit more.
Driving events are fantastic fun to go to, the competitors are always so friendly. We were at one last weekend and i'm really looking forward to next one which is a national competition and will be the end of May at Hopetoun Castle

Having just got out of 10 days of enforced hospital stay with back issues, riding is going to be out of the question for quite a while. (back problems not horse related I hasten to add) So, I'm thinking about having a go at driving. I'm pretty certain that my big Comtois girl Summer will have driven in France, she certainly gives those indications. Is there anyone in the Northamptonshire area who drives who would be willing to show me the ropes so to speak? And also is there anyone who would be able to help with tracking down some 2nd hand draft horse size harness to get Summer going and long reining (friend on standby for the legwork at the moment). Would obviously be interested in a suitable 2nd hand cart too. I don't want to go mad and splash out on really expensive harness until I know we will both enjoy it for certain. Summer is a 16h Comtois (french draft horse) who is built like a brick building you would take a newspaper into! Any help gratefully received. I'm desperate for something for Summer and me to do together while I get back to normal - plus it would be another interest for us anyway. ;D

Checkout dragon driving for harness and carriages, also the dhdta and bds websites are pretty good, think there should also be a list of instructors. Its very addictive

Cholderton. Burton dassett is south on leamington spa so might be to far for you. But it is a nice but hill open park and if you get there before the sightseers its very quiet.

Loving the driving pictures! We're just breaking one of our Shetland boys to harness. He's a full up 42" lad, 4yo and also lightly backed. Hoping he'll make a nice ride and drive one day. It's slow going, just for lack of time, but he's longreining very sweetly and comfortable in his harness. I'm looking out for a little exercise trap for him

I drive my little Dartie Mare, I broke her to drive when she kept bolting with the children, the louder she screamed, the faster she galloped!!
I also had a lovely Doylan Section B gelding - unfortuently, he prefered my groom to me, so had to sell him, but he was beautiful!! will try and upload a photo, when I work it out!!

Carriage Driving is my passion, I love everything about it, and the driving of horses and ponies is a Big Subject, AND the driving of horses and ponies as they should be driven is a skill, and the handling of a well-matched and well put together team(4) of horses trotting in unison at ten miles an hour, light on the hand, yet with every horse in his bridle provides a "thrill" as great as in any good sport. I have owned and driven single, pair, and tandam, but never my own team, but have driven other people's , I have been lucky and had good teachers when some of them could still remember the working horse on the street. So my knowledge has been practised and proved over the years, and if anyone would like any help with there driving please ask.

Hi drea and cholderton, We live in France have been here for 11 years breeding ride and drive Fell Ponies, which is my other passion the working pony, do take a look at our website globetrotterstud.com I also have a article in the Native Pony Mag this April May issue on Driving Natives. I agree with you drea that the skill of working horses and ponies must not be lost, we must carry this practical understanding into the future by driving and longreining and training young horses and ponies to drive, as books seem to lay down hard and fast rules, which is not always possible as horses and ponies vary so much in their temperament's, and so do we.
