straw for me, cheap and lovely deep bed with bankings, i just can't do shavings, love a traditional straw bed, found shavings hard work, but could be my old age lol.

I hate straw but with the increasing costs for shavings, today have made the decision to put one on straw to see how I manage no doubt in a week I will be begging for the shavings back!!

years ago the first yard i worked in ( hunters ) we always used straw, lovely deep litter beds with huge banks, then the event yard i moved on to a few years later used shavings, took me ages to 'like' them, over the years i have used both for my horses, but now i use shavings, simply as my highlands would eat straw, and also the dust, one of mine has a dust allergy, i do have high banks & semi deep litter but i take the top of the bed each day and throw it back, helping to air the bed, i use 2 to 3 bales a week on what i think are the 2 most mucky ponies i have ever owned, one thing i miss with straw is its cleaning power, bring a horse in with muddy legs and the straw cleans up their legs quite nicely.

Wood pellets get my vote. They absorb unlike straw and shavings. Less waste as only remove the poo.

Shavings with rubber matting ;D
Doesn't smell as much as straw.
However I love a nice deep straw bed ;D

type of straw influences how absorbent it is, wheat is best, barley looks pretty but does not soak the wee up.

Tbh I changed from straw as it was expensive! And always had a huge muck heap!

I love shavings beds, absolutely hate the smell of wet straw beds! Just moved on to the woodpellets though and I was so sceptical and it was just a trial to start with but i absolutely LOVE them! sooooo easy to muck out and half the price of shavings, not only that but after a week the beds are STILL clean and I've not put any new pellets in yet. I might be just lucky but hey, I dont care! with three horses I've saved a fortune this week alone. I was using a bare minimum of a bale a day between them whether it be straw or shavings, usually more cos I'm so finiky (OCD according to my stable mates ... lol!) Yep, wood pellets are now my favorite bed of all time!

This makes for an interesting debate. I currently have mine on straw- however shavings would stop her eating it all. Ive also read that Orbious (sp) is good- anyone use it??
