Do the m&ms in your opinion get enough coverage in h&h? I think showing in general is not very well reported, especially the Olympia qualifiers, as this is most undoubtedly the ultimate for the ridden. It should surely hit the headlines more than it does. We also never read anything about the welsh in hand.

I cancelled my subscription to H&H about 18 months ago due to the lack of coverage of M&Ms. I do sometimes miss it when people talk about certain articles, but the money is better going towards something useful than a magazine that I had reached the stage of only flicking through.

I know someone who wrote to horse and hound about this after the poor coverage of olympia with only winners pictures! They would not publish the letter and said in their opinion, it recieved enough coverage because it had 2 pages! Not good enough !!!!

Last year yes (as i remember this same discussion taking place). But so far this year they've not done too badly at all. Just look at last weeks. BSPS winters got a 4 page report - loads of pics -5 being m&ms, can't ask for much more than that South of england - again 3 page report, 3 pics of m&ms which isn't bad considering there were only basically 2 types of classes available!! Previous weeks PUK winters was good for coverage and pictures too i thought. Perhaps they've listened to us, so why not give them a chance based on what they do this year before you start complaining about past trends

The M&M WHP deserve as much if not more coverage than the Ridden's so let's see it for the jumpers

I too cancelled my sub to H&H last year. They recently contacted me with a 'trial offer' for 6 weeks, I am currently studying the content to see whether its worth keeping the subscription. Always used to enjoy reading it but there are no other mags on the market that seem to do more for m&ms. The sales guy who phoned said they were listening to comments???

H+H listen to comments. Print letters that are slightly controversial. Surely not!!!! ?

I would say that there is good coverage of the M&M's in horse and hound, not only in all aspects of the showing but I have noticed recently some great PR for welshies in reports of other disciplines.
Take a look in the dressage reports this week and there are 2 welsh cobs named, breeding given, and discussed at length that are doing well against all the warmbloods and rest of the dressage world in affiliated dressage.
For other magazines - there is also 'Showing World' that always has good coverage of the M&M showing if that is all you are interested in reading about.
Lexy.

In last week's H&H Stuart Hollings suggested that we should have more showing coverage through the winter in H&H and asked what the readers thought. I have e-mailed my agreement to them but it had to go to the letters page so I don't know whether they will print it. They have printed quite a few of my letters in the past (spanning a period of some 40 years!) including a rather controversial one, so we'll see!!!

The main problem seems to be that Lucy Higginson (Editor) is not really very interested in "ponies"..... she doesn't really understand the huge pony owning / showing / jumping / dressage / hacking etc..market.
However the showing editor Nicola Swinney seems to be really interested in getting better coverage....so suggest that you get articles, letters comments into the H&H office....

there are no other mags on the market that seem to do more for m&ms. As Leo says, there is the Native Pony and the editor ALWAYS listens to what people have to say for the content. IMO it's good because it proves that natives can do more than just showing which I think is important for their future survival. The Showing World is turning out to be quite good too, although IMO it could perhaps start to be produced more often than at present.

If anyone has ever worked in a magazine you can understand how hard it is to please everyone! I think the h&h have done fairly well this year. If you write reports for h&h you are often specifically asked what qualifiers to cover and obviously if there are rihs qualifiers there on the day they get priority. Often reporters get a very small amount of words and it is very hard to please everyone and get everyones name mentioned. Most of the time you need to be champion to get in there! I think the m&ms get as much coverage now as any other showing and especially when breed shows are covered. No SP/SHP wld get mentioned unless it was a hoys or rihs qualifier. The showing coverage dipped a few years back and unfortunately i think this was partly due to showing people being the hardest to please! There were moans all the time from showing people as to why there pony wasnt mentioned or how come this bit wasnt included etc SJ, Dressage and eventing people seem far more laid back about their coverage! Also unfortunately as much as we love showing and think it is the most important thing to other people it really isnt. At the end of the day racing, sj and to some extent eventing all gets covered on tv, when is showing covered? It is just not as marketable or interesting to the observer and unfortunately not as big a business.
