Holly was Champ at Hoys AND Champ at RIHS 1975-1978 inclusive - surely unrepeatable. (She was beaten in her 13.2 class at Royal Norfolk (she bucked) by Pendley Wizard ridden by .Katie Jerram). Don't remember her beaten by a Cooper pony in a 13.2 class. Was beaten in a several Championships during her 4 year reign of supremacy - Amazing website - ALL BREED PEDIGREE INDEX - has pedigree and progeny of most of the great show ponies - [/quote] I don't know if its true or not but I recall being told years ago that she was purchased as a youngster for £14,000. An unbelievably whopping amount in the early half of the 1970's.

Holly's breeder sold her as a 4 yr old in 1975. He was the owner in the catalogue when she was ridden champ at R Windsor that year. There were rumours about sales around the 10k mark for some of the top ponies at that time.

i have the photo in an old Horse and hound or pony world of Cathryn riding the Vagabond pony and Camilla on Holly think Cathryn also won the 12.2 on Sinton Vagabond, in tose days the coopers had several strings ie Rotherwood Snap Happy and Sinton Vagabond for the 12,2 Holly and T. Vagabond for 13.2 and in 14.2 they had a dark bay which Claudia rode and the Oakley bubbling simone , then Prian John Halifax, and Zephyrin fairytale for Cathryn in 14.2 and then Touchdown which she did Side saddle on also a gey 13hh worker
dont recall Holly ever being beaten in a champ though

Holly was Reserve Ch to Oakhalls Halloween at the Royal show in 1977. I think either Gay Sovereign or Blagdon Gaytime (both produced by Andy Crofts) also won a Championship above her. Claudia's horse began with a P Most of old catalogues in attic - I will unearth them one day!

As breeders, we have bred 2 supreme pony champions at HOYS. Greylands Little Gem in1999 and Greylands Maid in the dark in 2009. Possessing only 3 pony mares not a bad record I think!

I seem to remember that the lovely 12.2 hh Ocean So Fair won her class four times at HOYS, and was also champion on one occasion.

Very impressive Greylands, it's much more difficult to breed one than buy one(even if you do have very deep pockets!) You should be very proud. I remember seeing Maid in the Dark in 09 she is beautiful.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Yes it is difficult to breed champions especially when we have such a small number of pony mares. More by luck than judgement maybe!! let's hope there are more champions in the pipeline!

Congratulations Greylands, fabulous tally for a small breeder.
On another note, which ponies do you think we will look back at and think how wonderful they were?

Just stumbled across this... horseytalk.net/HorseyInterviews/Ron_DebbieThomas.htmlI remember Pete and Gemma always having a bit of banter about who'd won HOYS the most times, think Pete is on about 8!? They also used to say the'yd had a winner at HOYS every year since goodness knows when!

I got into showing/BSPS after seeing Cathryn and Holly on Blue Peter. At my first ever BSPS show - BSPS Area 1a in 1979 - we were parked next to the Cooper's lorries (think she had Zephryn Fairylight there and won) I was totally in awe. I dread how much a modern day "Holly" with the same record would go for today.

The wonderful Holly of Spring 3 times Pony of the year and only ever beaten twice in 3 years once byCusop Heiress at Pagent of the horse ( Holly was a bit sharp) and once by the Coppers other 13.2 Chestnut pony whos name escapes me- somebody must know its name Camilla Hall was on Holly and Cathryn was on the other 13.2 the name of this pony is going to worry me all day - must be getting old lol Holly was the best and i doubt if we ever will see her like again!!! what was that ponys name? Just bumping a very old thread to add that Holly was beaten at the Three Counties Show in 1977, and by Creden Accolade (ridden by Lucy Crow). Blagdon Gaytime went champion, with Accolade reserve. Very bored today I just found this in The Times archives.
